A talented two-way backstop, Tanner offers an above average bat and mammoth throwing arm behind the plate. He's built for power and has begun really leaning into that tool. Behind the plate, the arm strength is significant, but it's his development and athleticism out of the crouch that have big league scouts fairly certain he'll stick back there as a pro. Tanner might never be a catcher that hits for a ton of average, but the tools suggest a big league catcher with thump at the plate and a definitive asset defensively.

A participant in the Perfect Game All-American and Under-Class All-American Game in high school, Tanner has continued to perform at an elite level in Starkville. Extremely sturdy at 6-foot and 215 pounds, he has the classic catcher's build and physicality. His glove work is advanced as he subtly grows the strike zone for his pitchers, and he is an excellent blocker. Tanner has a cannon for an arm and is known to throw runners out from his knees. With the stick, he uses a compact stroke to impact the ball with violence, he has plenty of juice, and has proven himself to be a high-level run producer. -CC

Tanner is one of three collegiate backstops on this list. He happens to be the surest bet to remain behind the plate heading forward, therefore he gets the nod heading into the season. Tanner is considered to be an above-average defender with a strong arm (he used to pitch), and he's already had experience catching pro-level arms; last season alone, he caught three pitchers who were drafted in the fifth round or earlier -- and that doesn't include Landon Sims, who ought to go in round one this summer. Tanner does give away some of his advantage at the dish, but his raw power and willingness to walk should combine with his mitt to give him a fairly high floor.

24. Red Sox — Logan Tanner, C, Mississippi State
Carlos’ take: I don’t have much feel for the Red Sox pick tendencies, especially in this range. They’ve taken prep infielders in each of the last three drafts but all of those picks are quite a bit different both in terms of bonus, draft position and player profile. Again, I feel like I’m just going to take one of the best players available here and go with Tanner, who is ranked No. 17 on our draft board and has the best catching arm in the college class.
Scout’s take: I think the same. Red Sox take the best available at this point. They are pretty balanced in their minor league system. Tanner immediately becomes Boston’s best catching prospect as a defense-over-hit profile. This may be a safer bet than taking a chance on an arm with its first pick. The AL East is the toughest in baseball right now and the Red Sox need valuable assets to continue as contenders.

As I’ve stated many times, catchers don’t receive a boost in any of my fantasy rankings due to their positional eligibility. That does very little for us in the fantasy realm and when it comes to prospects, we don’t even know if a particular player will be moved off the position to give them increased long-term value. As for Tanner, this is solely about the bat — although he does have a real chance to stick behind the dish thanks to a 70-grade arm and receiving skills that should develop into being above average as he works through the farm. At the end of the day, Tanner’s bat should be capable of 25+ homers in the big leagues. He hit .287/.383/.525 last season after having just 41 ABs as a freshman in 2020, leading the NCAA-champion Bulldogs with 15 home runs while also tallying 13 doubles. With that came a 16.8% strikeout rate and 13.7 walk rate — numbers you have to feel good about for a prospect with 81 college games on his resume. Like most catchers, he’ll be a lost cause in the stolen bases department. But the swing is advanced for a prospect of his age, and I have no doubt that it will play at the professional level. If you need evidence of that, perhaps you missed the 2021 NCAA Baseball Tournament. Even so, he has a track record of performing against some of the nation’s top collegiate arms and while I see him going in the second round as it stands today, another strong season could easily propel him into the top-30 picks. Tanner is primed to be another value selection in FYPDs so long as his 2022 campaign doesn’t elevate the price tag too much.

Tanner ranked as the No. 312 prospect in the 2019 draft class out of high school, when he showed impressive ability on both sides of the ball. In addition to being a polished catcher, Tanner was an interesting pitching prospect who could run his fastball up to 95 mph. After making it to campus at Mississippi State, though, he settled into a full-time catching role and enters the 2022 season as the top catch-and-throw backstop in the class. His arm is a clear tier ahead of most other catchers in the class, with double-plus grades and should allow him to keep the running game in check. He’s gotten favorable reviews for his receiving ability and work ethic behind the plate dating back to his prep days and most view him as a future above-average defender at the game’s most premium position. While defense comes first when discussing Tanner, he did just come off a 2021 season where he homered 15 times. Tanner has yet to hit over .300 in college, and scouts don’t see an above-average hit tool, but he has strength and all-fields power that could allow him to clear the offensive bar of the position. He does a solid job getting on base (14% career walk rate) but if he can swing and miss a bit less this spring—particularly against sliders—he could climb up boards.
