#53        Tate Southisene

SS/OF    Basic (NV)

18/years old        5' 11"        165

COMMITTED  -  Southern California

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

In 2024, Ty Southisene came out of Basic High School in Nevada and landed in the fourth round of the Draft, where the Cubs went over slot to sign him for $1 million. Now it’s younger brother Tate’s turn. He has the chance to go even earlier after a terrific summer showcase circuit performance with the opportunity to become the earliest Basic product to get drafted, eclipsing right-hander Andrew Church, a second-round pick (No. 48 overall) of the Mets back in 2013.

While still not the tallest guy in the world, Southisene is a bigger, more physical version of his 5-foot-9 brother with the chance to have more offensive impact. Like Ty, he has outstanding bat control and makes a ton of contact from the right side of the plate. He’s very aggressive, exhibiting bat speed and strength, and the control he has is surprising given how big of a swing he generally takes. He might not be quite as good of a pure hitter as Ty, but he easily has more power.

The physicality has shown up beyond the batter’s box. Southisene is a plus runner and his strength and athleticism make him a more natural shortstop than his older brother, with solid actions and enough arm. Some scouts like him in center field as much, if not more. He’s committed to Southern Cal for college, where he could play with Ty’s twin brother Tee if the Draft doesn’t work out.

No. 40 Los Angeles Dodgers: Tate Southisene, SS/OF, Basic, Nevada

The Dodgers take Southisene, a USC commit, here. He’s the brother of Ty Southisene, who the Cubs drafted a year ago. He is the No. 43-ranked prospect at FloBaseball.

23. Tate Southisene – 3B

HT/WT: 6’0/170 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: Basic Academy (NV) | Commitment: Southern California | Age: 18.9

Next up in the Southisene family line, there’s a chance that Tate goes higher in the draft than his brother, Ty. He’s not a physically imposing player in the box at 6’0, 170 pounds, but his athleticism, sheer rotational force, and bat speed help him stand out.

It’s a relaxed, closed stance at the plate with a low handset and his hands move violently through the zone, helping him create the bat speed he’s known for. It’s a more linear bat path that is built for hard line drives, though there’s impressive raw juice to his pull side with lift, as he’s hit 107 MPH for a home run during PG National.

It’s an explosive toolset, plus he’s got a mature approach and rarely chases. His arm strength is impressive in the infield and outfield, possessing great carry and velocity into the mid-90s or higher.

His footwork is strong at both positions and he has the speed to handle center field, though he fits best on the left side of the dirt or in right field. Overall, it’s a tantalizing profile with bloodlines that teams look for. If he goes unselected, he’ll attend Southern California.

Showcases quick feet on the dirt with range both ways. Soft hands catch the ball well with smooth actions through the catch point. Fast, clean arm action produces easy carry across. Tate Southisene has solidified his status as a top prospect in the 2025 high school class following an impressive high school and summer showcase season.

Scouts project Southisene, a USC commit, as a potential first-round pick in the 2025 MLB draft. The standout shortstop from Basic (Nevada) High School has drawn on his brother’s draft experience to navigate the attention and pressure. The Chicago Cubs selected his brother, Ty, in the fourth round of the 2024 MLB draft.

Scouts rave about the 5-foot-11, 173-pound shortstop’s offensive skills. The right-handed hitter consistently makes hard contact and drives the ball to all fields with authority, all while displaying advanced plate discipline. Defensively, Southisene aims to remain at shortstop, showcasing a strong arm, above-average speed, and excellent instincts that elevate his game.
