Tom Brennan - Tom's Tidbits - Minors: Who's Hot, Who's Not

METS MINOR LEAGUERS - WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT

Every season, some are hot, and some are....well...not so hot.

Let's get down to it.

This year, some (happily) are truly hot.

(If a guy is not listed, he is basically neither hot nor cold).

WHO'S HOT

SYRACUSE

Joey Meneses - obviously not a prospect...but how can a first baseman with no HRs be hot?  Well, he has 13 doubles already in 68 ABs, and is hitting .309.  The top major leaguer in doubles through Sunday, by comparison, had 10.

Drew Gilbert - he is healthy and rocking.  After his first two rehab games, he has gone 11 for 24 with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs.  Only 4 Ks. Rocking.

Dom Hamel - of course, everyone knew that Hamel would be the Mets' best AAA pitching. 8 scoreless innings, 4 hits, 0.00, 8 Ks.  Just 1 walk.

Brandon Waddell - the best of the 2 Brandons so far. 19.1 IP, 1.40 ERA.

Brandon Sproat - 3.31 ERA, but has had some excellent starts.

 - LET'S GO, BRANDON.

Blade Tidwell - 4.43 ERA a tad high, but some great outings.

Anthony Gose - his ERA is as easy as 1.23 (doh-re-me).

Ty Adcock - a nearly perfect 5 innings in relief (0.00)

NOT HOT

Grant Hartwig & Dedniel Nunez - duo has combined for a killer 20 Ks in 12 innings, but have a combined WHIP of over 2.00.

BINGHAMTON

WHO'S HOT:

5 scorching pitchers...

Nolan McLean - 0.60 ERA through 3 starts, including his latest on Saturday.  15 innings, 22 Ks. A friend on Broadway says his stuff is Wicked.

Jack Wenninger - 3-0, 1.20, 0.73 WHIP,  15 innings, 22 Ks- dang!

Felipe de la Cruz - 9.1 IP, 13 Ks, 1.93.

Joander Suarez - 8 shutout innings, 4 hits, no walks, 9 Ks.

Doug Orellana - 5.1 IP, 8 Ks, 1 hit allowed.

NOT HOT:

Jonah Tong - 8 hits, 7 walks, 6 runs, and 11 Ks in 9 IP. Not hot - so far.

Several bullpen arms have been bullspit.  Relievers are 2-4, 5.66.

The hitters:

Binghamton is hitting .226, but of that, McNeil and Alvarez are 12 for 31, so the rest of the team - the real team - is hitting around .210.  Jett and Clifford have been heating up in recent games, but combined are still .240.

Particularly frigid are Parada, Morabito and Ramirez, who are hitting poorly and fanning a ton (50 Ks in 118 ABs) - I found out why.  To save electricity, they shut off the lights when these 3 homeys come to bat:

Alex Ramirez - in his first 40 official at bats through Saturday, he fanned 18 times and is .150.

Nick Morabito - in his first 48 at bats thru Saturday, he has 9 hits, fanned 20 times, and is sub-.200.

Kevin Parada in his first 30 official at bats through Saturday, he fanned 12 times and is .133.

I wanted to cite fewer players in A ball, to keep this article relatively short, but still far beyond TIDBIT size.

Hard, however, to do that with the following scorching team:

HIGH A BROOKLYN - many scorchers:

WHO'S HOT:

Chris Suero has a .739 slug %, but has fanned 18 times in 13 games, which is an aberrant rate for him. Great season start, though.  SIXTEEN RBIs and 11 XBH in 13 games.

Jacob Reimer - 10 XBH, 12 RBIs and .345.  Reimer is a climber.

Estarling Mercado - .393/.469/.536 in 8 games - hello!

Eli Serrano scorched to start the season, but has slipped to 9 for 43, but his superb 13 walks still gives him a .393 OBP.

D'Andre Smith - .294 with a .405 OBP. 7 for 7 in steals.

Zack Thornton - 16 IP, 5 hits, 0.00, 22 Ks. Wow.

Joel Diaz - 9.2 IP, 0.00.

Anthony Nunez - the reliever has tossed 6.2 IP, NO HITS, 11 Ks. Sick!

Ryan Lambert - 6 IP, 13 Ks for the fireballer.  Sizzle!

Dylan Ross - 5.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 10 Ks.  Diana Ross is gleeful. Me, too.

And others.

NOT HOT:

Ronald Hernandez: 5 for 37.

Nick Roselli is 5 for 34.

Jon Santucci - 1.78 WHIP thru 10.2 IP. But 14 Ks in his pro debut.

SINGLE A:

WHO'S HOT:

Pitching:

Frank Elissalt, Hunter Hodges, and Chandler Marsh have combined for 23.1 IP, allowing just FOUR HITS, 1 run, and fanning 36.  WOW!

Also pitching well are Will Watson and the resurrected Matt Allan.

Hitting:

Marco Vargas: .438/.561/.594 in 9 games!  What a line.

AJ Ewing: in 13 games, what a line. .429/.517/.633 with 16 RBIs!

Jeremy Rodriguez: in 14 games, .289/.421/.289.  Searching for a double.

NOT HOT:

Simon Juan at .111.

Colin Houck - 9 for 49, 17 Ks.

Quite the contrast between those 2 and their hot-hitting teammates.

FINALLY...

ONE THAT GOT AWAY:

I live a boring life, and occasionally like to keep tabs on still-active ex-Met farmhands. One is ex-Met farmhand Eric Orze, who was a guy I wanted to keep as a NY Met.

Why?  Maybe because he is - I dunno - good?

This year, in the majors, minors, and spring training, 16.2 IP, 6 hits allowed, 2 runs, more than a K per inning.  Nothing to not like there.

In some years, you'd moan about it - but the Mets have such pitching depth right now, I am glad he is getting his opportunity in the big leagues.

P.S.

Mets win 5-4, move to 16-7. Megill, Lindor, and Winker were sensational.

As of this morning, the Mets are tied for THE BEST RECORD IN BASEBALL

Eddie from Corona is right

This team so sucks

Cold weather = cold bats. Except for polar bears. Guess what? 73 degrees at game time tonight in Coronavirus, Queens. Play ball.

What you are watching here nightly is a team with timely batting and throw out of your arse pitching. I love it.

Tom Brennan said...

MVP for Pete or Alonso, Cy Young for 1.09 Megill, with 30 Ks in 24 IP? I still remember watching him on MILB.TV when he was in A ball, thinking, “this guy in the 8th round might REALLY be something.” Maybe he truly will be.

JD Realmuto is 34, and is hitting in the low .230s with just 1 HR and 7 RBIs and a .333 slug %. Is age catching up with him?

Mack Ade said...

what Heffner needs to do is work on getting this guy consistently through six innings. That's enough for me until the summer heat returns

Mack said...

Age is really hard on the legs of a catcher. Legs are needs for throws to second as well as turning on pitches.

The pitching on the farm had indeed been superb. Reportedly, the big club is planning to bring up a starter this Friday.
If so, who will it be (Tidwell was great on Sunday), and who will go to make room?

Lot of great tidbits Tom.

Good to see Gilbert start to step up....could he be part of the CF equation in the second half.

What can I say about McGil. I was wr, wr wrong about him. I blasted him all spring. As I've said in the past, I will gladly eat crow...but not until he lasts 6 innings.

Diaz is scaring the crap out of me. Right now, he looks like mop up duty instead of the closer.

Overall, great start to the season. And when Soto, Vientos and several others start hitting...yowzah.

Have an upcoming three part SP chain analysis coming up in future Observations posts

Still Mack said...

Diaz remains a great closer, if you bring him in with a 5-6 run lead

Tom Brennan said...

Diaz if he had no big contract and had options left could be sent down. The velocity drop makes him mortal.

Tom Brennan said...

Megill has great stuff, simplified it, better results. Ditto for Tidwell.

Paul Articulates said...

Definitely agree. That's why the Binghamton roster is batting poorly. Give them warmth!!

Paul Articulates said...

It took a long time for Megill to get where he is. That just goes to show that patience is needed in baseball. He could have easily been "one that got away" under any other GM.

Did everyone fall out of love with my IN FOCUS posts?

I cam stop them if you wish

Keep up the post. I enjoy reading them

I refer to Fleetwood Mack Mack and "Don't Stop" those in focus posts. By the way I hope Vientos who i've heard nothing about is back before the All-Star break as we all know how these things usually play out.

hahaha all it took was Free Agent Soto, and the right man running the team (David Stern) but as I continue to evaluate... Where are all the Minor league prospects infusing the MLB team? Acuna? really a slap hitting infielder? where are our aces? the Dodgers traded for Betts, ( we did with Lindor but thats 4 years ago) what else is there that you can say is cant miss...

Last cant miss prospect we had was Alvarez... how many allstars has be attended??
