In reading through the various Play-Off predictions this morning, I happened to peruse the stats columns (no surprise) and my eye wandered over to Jason Heyward of the Atlanta Braves, the majority prediction for Rookie-of-the-year:
Games:120
At-Bats: 520
Runs: 83
Hits: 144
Doubles: 29
Home Runs: 18
RBIs:72
Strike Outs: 128
Avg.: .277
On-Base: .393
SLG: .456
Now, a comparison to the Mets' Ike Davis, who's isn't finding his way into many "Top 5" rookie predictions:
Games: 147 (+27 games, not all as starter)
At-Bats: 523 (+3)
Runs: 73 (-10)
Hits: 138 (-6)
Doubles: 33 (+4)
Home Runs: 19 (+1)
RBIs: 71 (-1)
Strike Outs: 138 (+10)
Avg.: .264 (-.013)
On-Base: .351 (-.044)
SLG: .440 (-.016)
Overall, the numbers are very, VERY close. Heyward is certainly looking like a future gold glove winner in the outfield; Davis ALREADY looks like a Gold Glover at first base. Davis led in Doubles and Home Runs, and certainly would have led in RBI's if he had more people on base in front of him, as Heyward did. Heyward is better at getting on base, but Davis was put into a power role, when he should pan out as a #3 hitter in a more well-rounded lineup. Overall, while I agree that Heyward had a great rookie season, and looks to be a future superstar, if you are going to consider him the front-runner for ROY honors, you MUST also consider IKE!!!
(And I DO have that bobble-head, by the way!!)
