B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME: The B-Mets used a five-run third inning and held on to defeat the Akron Aeros 7-4 last night Canal Park. Last night’s win guarantees Binghamton the series win; snapping a seven series losing skid. Binghamton responded after Beau Mills gave Akron the lead with a solo home run in the second. In the third, the first seven men reached safely against Akron starter Austin Adams. Jose Coronado walked to start the frame and was quickly moved up on Jon Malo’s double. It was the first of a career-high four hits for Malo. Reese Havens tied the game with a single to center. Newcomer Bubba Bell jumped right in with single to right to give Binghamton the lead for good. The B-Mets would go on to tag Adams for four more runs on an RBI single from Allan Dykstra, a bases-loaded walk to Eric Campbell, and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch on Jean Luc Blaquiere. Coronado, the tenth man to bat in the inning, bounced into a double play against reliever Eric Berger to end the threat. B-Mets starter Brad Holt loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but bounced back to trouble. The right-hander struck out a pair of Aeros before inducing Mills to fly out to left. Roy Merritt took over in the fifth and worked two perfect in-nings for his first win. Akron scored three runs off Ricky Brooks and Erik Turgeon in the final three innings, but the comeback fell short.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Collin McHugh makes his second Double-A start. The right-hander debuted against the Erie SeaWolves in the second game of a doubleheader on May 31. He allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out five over six innings in a no-decision. McHugh was selected in the 18th round of the 2007 draft. He went 1-2 with a 6.31 ERA with St. Lucie (High-A) to start the season before being promoted to Binghamton on May 31.

LHP T.J. McFarland will make his ninth start of the season and first against the B-Mets. He is on a four-game losing streak after allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings in a loss to the Reading Phillies on May 31. McFarland is tied for the league-lead with two complete games, however; both have been losses. He was selected by the Indians in the 4th round of the 2007 draft out of Stagg HS (Palos Hills, IL).

TWO ROADTRIPS IN ONE: RHP Erik Turgeon was promoted to Buffalo (AAA) on 6/3. He surrendered a home run and retired one batter to nail down a save against the Gwinnett Braves in his Triple-A debut on Friday night. Turgeon returned to the B-Mets for last night’s game.

ADDITIONAL MOVES: OF Carlos Guzman was released before last night’s game. Guzman hit .228 in 42 games this year
