Taylor Jungmann, Carlos Guzman, Matt Purke, Wilmer Flores, Dillon Gee

Texas 6-6 RHP Taylor Jungmann is becoming a favorite as the Mets first pick in the draft on Monday. Frankie Piliere  says that the Mets will pick Jungmann; of course, if he’s still on the board at #13. For the season: 13-0, 0.95, 116-K in 122.2-IP, only 67-H. I would love this to happen, but a lot of things have to fall into place first. There are seven players (Gerrit Cole, Anthony Rendon, Bubba Starling, Sonny Gray, Dylan Bundy, Danny Hultzen, Jed Bradley) that are guaranteed to be gone. The rest is up for grabs.


OF Carlos Guzman was released by the Binghamton Mets on Saturday. I got to know Carlos pretty well when he was in Savannah and our friendship continued through his journey to St. Lucie and Binghamton. I believe I was the only person to put him in a prospect category and he was part of my “The Keeper” list for over two years. Guzman was never drafted (out of my home town of Ozone Park, NY) and had to fight his way on the roster every year. He went down last year with a season ending injury and never seemed to recover bat wise in 2011. Maybe the best arm the Mets ever had in the outfield. I’ll miss him.


Last night was the last start that TCU LHP Matt Purke. Purke went 5.0-IP, 2-ER, 6-K against Dallas Baptist in their loss. Why do I bring this up? Well, you’re looking at the Mets’ pick at #44.


It’s time for us to take a deeper look at SS Wilmer Flores and see how he is… err… progressing this season. In his defense, he’s still only 19-years old, which translates to a college freshman, or sophomore. However, let’s look deeper. The one true stat teams look for progress from the kids is OPS. Here’s what Wilmer has done: 2008 K-Port: .842… 2009 Gnats: .637… 2010 Sav/Lucy: .751… 2011 Lucy: .679. I’m going to keep saying this until someone important reads it. Leave the kid in Lucy through the 2012 season and give him time to lose his baby fat. At the same time, bump Robbie Shields ahead of him, which is where he’s supposed to be in the first place.


So, I guess we have to start re-evaluating the future Mets rotation now that they have another 6-0 pitcher. And, he’s only 25-year old. So, the Mets pick Texas RHP Taylor Jungmann with the first pick Monday night, and LHP Matt Purke is still on the board at #44. Next year, the rotation is Santana, Pelfrey, Niese, Dickey, and Gee, followed up in 2012 with Harvey, Jungmann, Purke, Mejia, and one from Niese, Gee, and Familia. I like it.
