He really might be playing himself into a valuable trade commodity.
I know his attitude sucks, but there are teams who will value him just on talent.

That being said, I would currently bat him first until I could trade him for a taco stand.
Seriously, he would be a great third piece in a 3 for 1 for a top starter or outfielder.

Mack, you are impatient. I remember last year when you wanted to unload Parnell. And now he's our best reliever. Same thing here with Valdy. I understand that Valdespin has been a dog and a terrible teammate for years in the minors. But he's still very young (as a person, if not a ballplayer) and has shown signs of maturing. Perhaps in time he can be a starting outfielder for the Mets. He's the only dynamic athlete in the Mets lineup. The only one. I wouldn't be so quick to move him.
Who else in the lineup is likely to get on base via a bunt hit or a home run? Who else besides Wright and Cowgill is a threat to steal bases? Who else has shown development in terms of correcting wrongs (increased number of walks, etc.)? The problem is the Catch-22. According to the senile old man in charge, he's not a good enough outfielder to play the outfield. Then a few days later he starts him there. The only way he'll become a better outfielder is to play. He won't even become valuable trade fodder unless he plays. I can see playing Duda and Murphy. I can't necessarily see playing Byrd and Cowgill every day. That's where Valdespin should be getting his ABs.
This outfield sucks too badly to be making decisions based on personalities. The kid shows he can play - so play him.

Play him and boost his value. We could have another Kevin Mitchell situation where a player's talent is obscured by his personality and Valdy could wind up as a star on another team. I'd like to trade him because he seems like a me-first player and can act like a space cadet.

I believe yoiu are thinking of Nestor Chavez, who went 1-0 as a 19 year old with the Giants in 1967. He did show signs of maturing when he died in 1969 at the age of 21.

Look, I'm all about 2014.
In my book, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Collin Cowgill, and Lucas Duda should get the lion share of the at bats. I want to see if the Captain has what it takes before I turn it over to dD.
Next in line would be Byrd.
Regarding the infield, Turner is the perfect utility player behind Murphy and Tejada. Havens is off to a good start and there's always Flores.
All these guys are valuable to me in 2014, thus, they should get the maximum amount of at bats at their current level.
I know I'm not being realistic, but this is just me.
Think 2014... trade Valdespin.
