LAST GAME: The B-Mets committed five errors and dropped the series-opener to Portland, 8-2, on Monday night. With one out in the first, Alonzo Harris failed to catch a long fly ball in center, allowing Xander Bogaerts to reach third. Travis Shaw then grounded out, and put Portland on the board. It became 3-0 when Michael Almanzar blasted a two-run double to right field later in the first. Two more runs scored in the second, whenShannon Wilkerson hit an RBI single up the middle. Meanwhile, the B-Mets failed to crack the scoreboard against John Lackey during his Major League rehab start. He tossed 3.2 shutout innings, striking out five along the way. Binghamton made two more fielding errors in the fourth, and Portland extended their lead to 6-0. Jacob DeGrom was pulled after the fifth after he surrendered six runs, only one of which was earned. Chase Huchingsongave up two more unearned runs in the sixth inning. Shawn Teufel and John Church finished the game throwing a scoreless inning each. In the seventh, the B-Mets finally got on the board against Portland pitching. Danny Muno continued his productive roadtrip with a two-run single up the middle.
BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Tyler Pill makes his fourth start of the year with the B-Mets. He got his first win of 2013 in his last start, a 4-3 victory over New Hampshire. He threw 6.0 innings, gave up three runs on seven hits, and struck out six batters. On the season, he has struck out 14, and walked four. Opponents are hitting .338 overall against the righthander, and are hitting .438 (7-for-16) against him with runners in scoring position. Pill was ranked the #25 prospect in the Mets organization by Baseball America prior to the 2013 season. He was drafted by the Mets in the fourth round of the 2011 draft out of Cal State Fullerton.
PORTLAND STARTING PITCHER: RHP Craig Breslow is the second straight Portland pitcher making a Major League rehab start. The Red Sox reliever is scheduled to pitch the first inning of the game, before Brandon Workman takes over. Breslow was put on the DL on 3/31 for tendonitis in his left shoulder. After being traded from Arizona 7/31/12, he finished last season 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA with the Red Sox. Breslow appeared in 63 combined games in 2012; 23 of which came with Boston.
DEFENSIVE GAME TO FORGET: The B-Mets tied a season-high when they made five errors in the field last night. They also had five errors 4/7 @ AKR. Of the five errors, four them were committed by the outfield. In 2013, the B-Mets have committed 18 total errors. 10 of those have occurred in two games (4/7 @ AKR, 4/21 @ POR).
UNEARNED RUNS: Of the eight runs Portland scored last night, only one of them was earned. The seven unearned runs are the most Binghamton has allowed since 6/27/09 @ AKR (10 unearned runs). Prior to the game, the B-Mets had allowed five unearned runs this season.
STRONG ROADTRIP FOR MUNO: After going 1-for-20 in the first homestand of the the season, Danny Muno has gone 5-for-15 with eight RBI in the first five games of the current roadtrip. Muno is second on the B-Mets with 12 RBI. Cory Vaughn leads the team with 14.
HIT STREAKS: Currently, there are six B-Mets with hitting streaks of at least three games. Alonzo Harris has hit in six straight games, Cory Vaughn has hit in five, Allan Dykstra and Cesar Puello have hit in four, and Richard Lucas and Danny Muno have hit in three.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets conclude their seven-game roadtrip against the Portland Sea Dogs Wednesday night. RHP Erik Goeddelwill start for Binghamton against RHP Kyle Kaminska for Portland. First pitch is at 6:00 PM from Hadlock Field.
