Verrett Cruises in 7-2 Win
BINGHAMTON, NY – Logan Verrett allowed two runs on just two base hits through eight innings as the B-Mets topped the Akron Aeros, 7-2, Saturday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.
Alonzo Harris got the offense going right away, smashing a leadoff home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the first. Akron’s Chris Wallace matched Harris with a solo shot against Verrett to lead off the top of the second; one of the two base hits allowed by the right-hander. The B-Met offense continued their success against LHP Matt Packer, tallying single runs in each of the first four innings.
The Aeros scored on a sacrifice fly by Giovanny Urshela in the top of the fifth, but once again Binghamton responded. In the bottom of the sixth, Allan Dykstra hit a sac fly to score Alonzo Harris, and Blake Forsythe blew the game open with a two-run double down the right field line to give Binghamton a 7-2 lead.
Verrett’s day ended after eight innings. He finished up by retiring his final 11 hitters, and 21 of his last 22, to earn his league-leading fourth victory.
The B-Mets (12-10) and Aeros (9-13) face off in a rubber match Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. The B-Mets will send RHP Jacob deGrom (0-2, 1.38) to the mound against RHP Paulo Espino (1-0, 3.86). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
POSTGAME NOTES: Alonzo Harris went 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 10 games…Eight different B-Mets got at least one base hit, and all nine starters reached base safely.
