John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 6/11/2020

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday Jose Reyes, Frank Thomas, and Jordan Humphreys, today is the anniversary of one of the great Mets games in History – the Marlon Anderson Inside the park Home Run Game, and the Mets select OF Pete Crow-Armstrong in the first round of the 2020 Baseball.

Mets Links:

As we had last night on Mack’s Mets: Mets Pick – Round One: OF Pete Crow-Armstrong. “A standout hitter as a prep player, Pete Crow-Armstrong generally draws above-average grades on his hit-tool, but some will also put down a plus grade in the column. He’s shown the ability, both in high school and internationally, to hit quality stuff...Defensively is really where stands out. He’s a plus runner who can handle center field with ease. His arm also stands out at the position, giving him plus grades on defense in both categories.”

Mack’s Blast from the Recent Past: 5-27-20: Mack – Draft News – Pete Crow-Armstrong, Justin Lange, Mick Abel, Logan Allen, Carson McCusker. About “PCA” Mack had this: “In a class with so many college arms left on the board, I find it hard to believe that they’d pass up on Cade Cavalli, Cole Wilcox or Tanner Burns, but I also found it hard to believe that Crow-Armstrong could fall this far. With PCA, the Mets are getting one of the most successful prep hitters in the bat, standout defensive abilities and obvious athleticism at a premium position. After witnessing Jarred Kelenic take over the prospect world as a member of the Mariners organization, I can’t see the Mets steering away from the Vanderbilt commit.”

NY Post: “All spring I called him the left-handed magician in center field,” Mets vice president of international and amateur scouting Tommy Tanous said Wednesday after the team selected Crow-Armstrong with the 19th-overall pick in the first round of the draft. “He was one of the kids you saw last summer, one of the rare kids that you would watch batting practice and watch him play defense — going back on balls he had such a knack for the ball.”

SNY.TV (MetsBlog): What Mets' Pete Crow-Armstrong and Little Big League's Billy Heywood have in common. 'I love the movie. I think I'd love it if my mom wasn't in it'. “His mother, Ashley Crow, has appeared in movies like The Good Son and Minority Report, but perhaps her most well-known role is that of Jenny Heywood in the baseball movie Little Big League. Crow plays the mother of Billy Heywood, the 12-year-old who becomes owner and manager of the Minnesota Twins after his grandfather's will bequeaths the team to him.”

  • The influence of a Vietnamese monk;
  • Crow-Armstrong is not the first highly touted baseball prospect to come out of his high school, Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles. Other baseball alums include White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito, Cardinals righty Jack Flaherty, and Braves lefty Max Fried
  • Prior to being drafted by the Mets, Crow-Armstrong had committed to playing baseball at Vanderbilt. As the 19th overall pick, Crow-Armstrong's approximate signing bonus value, according to MLB.com, is around $3.36 million;
  • The Athletic details an at-bat that Crow-Armstrong had this past winter, in which, after listening to some poignant words from his head coach, Crow-Armstrong responded by saying "Coach, I'm going to hit the ball over that f---ing mountain." And that's exactly what he did, blasting a two-run home run in an eventual win.

NY Post: Claudell Washington, Yankees and Mets outfielder, dead at 65.

NY Post: Matt Harvey could be pitching sooner than the rest of MLB. Teams in the Korea Baseball Organization and Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball are looking at Matt Harvey, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

I do believe that I was at the Marlon Anderson inside-the-park home run game.

Just an all time classic game. Very cool you were there.

Many of the draft experts had PCA going to the Mets.

Great start to the draft.

Plenty of good to greats arms still out there.

Unless I missed it, Mr. Little is still on the board. Maybe the Mets will get him.

John -

I have Little projected in the 4th or 5th round

I love hitting, as you know. Throw in some great speed and defense, and I am good. Let's go draft some pitchers. A talented catcher wouldn't hurt.

Adolfo Philips had a great career that day.

John:

I have been to several games that rate as Mets Classics. The 10-run inning game capped by Piazza's 3-run homer. The 1988 NL East clincher. Piazza's debut as a Met. Steven Matz debut.

This game was a classic that does not get shown.

Another I was at was in 1997. The Mets were losing to the Expos 6-0 going into the ninth inning. Dustin Hermanson, the Expos pitcher had allowed one hit (an infield single). The Mets got a few hits and scored two runs off Hermanson, and he was removed from the game. With the bases loaded and two outs, Carl Everett hit a grand slam to tie the game at 6. Bernard Gilkey hit a 3-run homer to win it in extra innings. I remember that game as much as the Marlon Anderson game.

Another great game. Everett had another big game against the Marlins in 1997. They traded him to Houston for a John Hudek. Din't like the trade then or now.

Everett had an episode where his kid showed up at day care with bruises. I don't think he was ever charged with child abuse, but the suspicion alone was enough to get him banished from the Mets.
