Tom Brennan - ADRIAN GONZALEZ & DOMINIC SMITH

AFTER THE DRAFT, LET'S REFLECT BACK ON 2 FIRST ROUNDERS:

Adrian Gonzalez (AG) did not do well as a Met in his final year at age 36:

169 at bats and a very punchless .237.

But he was one of baseball’s best first basemen for years prior to that.

He finished 2nd in the MVP vote in one season, 4th in another, and ended up .287/.358/.485 with 317 career blasts and 1,202 RBIs.

He and Dom Smith (DS) (BTW, happy birthday, Dom) made the majors at almost exactly the same age.  Both were first rounders, both lefty swingers with sweet strokes.

In their first big league season:

Gonzalez had a split of .238/.273/.381 in limited ABs.

Smith? .198/.262/.385.

Close.

Second year?

AG .227/.272/.407.

Smith .224/.252/.420.

Close.

AG .304/.362/.500.

Smith .282/.355/.525.

Close.

Year 4?

AG had 46 doubles, 30 HRs, and 100 RBIs.  The stuff of stars.

Dominic Smith in year 4?  Well, he hasn’t played year 4 yet.

And, if and when he does play in 2020’s prorated season, is there any reason to think he won’t be close again to Gonzalez on a prorated basis?

If Pete Alonso had not shown up, it is not a stretch to me to think that Dom Smith might have turned out to be the Mets’ Adrian Gonzalez.

My humble advice?

If Smith does get traded at some point, which I am not foreseeing, but guys certainly do get traded in this great game of baseball, it better not be a giveaway.

After all, would you trade Adrian Gonzalez coming into his prime cheaply?  I wouldn't.

Dom is a good insurance policy in case Pete goes down.

A-Gon was traded twice before he got a chance to play for the Padres. The Padres made out, Rangers and Marlins did not (though the Marlins did get Ugeth Urbina). Like you said - better get something.

At the same time with the DH coming to the NL, there may be room for Dom.

Dom could be big for the Mets, partly because he is no longer big

I have simple expectations for Dom Smith: be BETTER than Adrian Gonzalez.

The hope is that Dom Smith is better than Dom DiMaggio (minus the baserunning speed).

And clearly better than Dom Deluise.
