John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 6/27/2020

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday Chris Woodward, it is the one year anniversary of a bad Mets loss in Philly and the resulting Mike Francesa rant, and we get more details about MLB's health protocols.

Mets Links:

Rising Apple: Mets prospects are key to keeping Marcus Stroman, Noah Syndergaard. Writer Tim Boyle feels that rookies may free up salary to keep them: “Right now, the Mets farm system has some arms on the rise. David Peterson is the closest to big league action with 2019 draftees Matthew Allan and Josh Wolf also falling in as notable names. We also shouldn’t neglect the other guys such as Jordan Humphreys, Kevin Smith, and Thomas Szapucki.”

Matt Netter Mets 360.com: For the Mets, even top 10 picks have been a crap shoot.  “From 1965 to 1969 the Mets had a run of futility in the draft. Chosen among the top five each year in that span were pitchers Les Rohr, Jon Matlack, and Randy Sterling, shortstop Tim Foli and catcher Steve Chilcott. Matlack, who was the 1972 Rookie of the Year and a three-time All-Star was clearly the cream of this crop. The Pennsylvania-born lefty had a career ERA of 3.18 and won 125 games over 13 seasons with the Mets and Rangers.”

Mets.com: 9 must-see Mets artifacts on display at Hall. The 1) Magical glove Tommie Agee used in Game 3 of the 1969 World Series; The Batting gloves that Pete Alonso when he smashed his 53rd homer and the hat Tom Seaver wore when he struck out 19 batters in the game and whiffing a still-standing record of 10 straight opponents to end the contest.

Mets.com: For Ron Swoboda, a latent appreciation of Hodges. 'He belongs in the Hall,' the 1969 champ said of his late manager.

SNY.TV (Mets Blog): What would it take for MLB to cancel the 2020 season? SNY has obtained amended language that sheds light on this question.

“The Commissioner retains the right to suspend or cancel the 2020 championship season or postseason, or any games therein, in the event that (i) restrictions on travel throughout the United States are imposed; (ii) there is a material change in circumstances such that the Commissioner determines, after consultation with recognized medical experts and the Players Association, that it poses an unreasonable health and safety risk to players or staff to stage those games, even without fans in attendance; or (III) The number of players who are unavailable to perform services due to COVID-19 is so great that the competitive integrity of the season is undermined.”

Matt Musico Metsmerized Online: Two Ways MLB Can Potentially Get Out of the Doghouse in 2020. “Mic The Dudes Up” and “Air More Games During the Day.”

MLB.com: The best 60-game stretches in MLB history.  No Mets made the list but here are some of the others: Batting average - Last decade: . 427 -- Josh Hamilton 2010; All-time leader: Rogers Hornsby (.466) 1924; On Base Average Last decade: .560 -- Joey Votto 2015; All-time leader: Barry Bonds (.613) 2004; Home runs Last decade: 33 -- Giancarlo Stanton 2017; All-time leader: Barry Bonds (37) 2001.

MLB.com: 12 candidates to hit .400 this season. No Mets mentioned.  Not even Jeff McNeil!  Here is their list: Superstars: José Altuve, Astros; Cody Bellinger, Dodgers; DJ LeMahieu, Yankees; Anthony Rendon, Angels; Mike Trout, Angels; Christian Yelich, Brewers; Sleepers: Luis Arraez, Twins; Howie Kendrick, Nationals: Alex Verdugo, Red Sox; Rockies: Nolan Arenado; Daniel Murphy; Yonathan Daza.

NJ.com: Why Yankees’ Aaron Boone is digging baseball’s new extra-inning rule. “I don’t think I’m such a traditionalist,” Boone said Thursday on a TickPick video chat. “I’m always open to some things changing and pushing the envelope and trying to find areas where you can make the game a little more exciting. A lot now, we’re trying to engage a younger fan base more and more.”  Personal note – It works in the minor leagues.  It actually forces teams to play small ball way more than they usually do.

Monroe High School standout Ed Kranepool, who was an Opening Day guest seated in the owners' box with Mrs. Joan Payson and M. Donald Grant, signs a contract that includes an $85,000 bonus, as an amateur free agent with the Mets. The 17 year-old Bronx teenager will spend his entire 18-year career with the expansion team, establishing franchise records for hits, plate appearances, and games played.
1973
In the opener of a twin bill at Shea Stadium, Buzz Capra pitches four innings of no-hit relief against the Phillies to get the save for starter George Stone as the Mets beat the Phillies, 7-6. A few hours earlier, the 25 year-old right-handed reliever had attended his dad's funeral in Illinois.

1993
Anthony Young sets a major league record when he drops his 24th straight decision, a 5-3 Mets loss to St. Louis at Shea Stadium. Baseball Reference:

1992: The Mets edge the Cards with all the runs coming on homers: Dave Gallagher and Tim Jones match dingers, and Howard Johnson's homer in the bottom of the 9th makes John Franco (6-0) a winner. It will be Johnson's last homer of the year.

2012: The Mets erupt for an uncharacteristic offensive outburst, crushing the Cubs, 17 - 1, their most runs in two years. They hit four homers, two by Daniel Murphy, a grand slam by Scott Hairston and a three-run shot by Ike Davis. With David Wright driving in 5 runs, those four players combine for all 17 RBI. Jon Niese is the beneficiary of all that offense, while Jeff Samardzija is charged with the loss.

Steroids = cheating, but for Bonds to hit 37 HRs in a stretch of 60 games? Mind-boggling.

Watched a bit of that Edwin Diaz melt down vs. Phillies - we better not see that sort of stuff this season. Bad short relief = bad short season.

I hate to say it at this point but I think there is a good chance of shutting down this season before it is scheduled to end.

There may be no fans in the stadiums in Texas and Florida but there sure in hell are visiting teams.

What happens if we see what is going on in the NBA.

Regarding college football, now 37 Clemson players have tested positive since camps were opened.
