Tony Plate - No Potential Mets Buyer for Now

Things in sports can change very quickly.

Just when I thought the Mets might find a potential buyer in both private equity billionaires Josh Harris and David Blitzer, who were serious about making a run to buy the team and add the club to their portfolio of teams, which includes the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, they decided to purchase a $140 million minority stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the greatest sports franchises of all time.

They have had much success in their history. They were the first NFL team that won back to back Super Bowls twice and won four out of six Super Bowls and were a dynasty in the 1970’s.

Harris and Blitzer are still interested in buying a stake in the Mets, but not as one of the primary bidders for that franchise. If they do buy a stake it would mean they would own a team in five different sports. After all of the hype no potential buyer for now.

I was thinking, what could have been, such as if they would have been able to purchase the team, they may have turned to free agency to sign a few big-name players to improve the team which is what the Mets have not been doing that much of in recent years. The reason is since they have those other franchises that shows much interest and a huge desire to win.

As for the Wilpons, who are really desperate to sell and may have parted with SNY to make the deal, which could have possibly given the new potential buyers a chance to merge their other franchises onto one huge regional sports network, which would have brought in a good chunk  of revenue offsetting the massive operating loss of the team. Sometimes things just simply don’t go according to plan.

The Wilpons’ are probably frustrated. Currently, times are very tough with the Major League Baseball season in more doubt than ever and the Mets financial picture going bad very fast, potential buyers can leverage the situation to buy the Mets for the lowest possible price, when and if there is a deal.

In other goings-on, the Mets signed two undrafted free agents, outfielder Brandon Mcllwain and right-handed pitcher Drake Nightengale, who was a senior at South Alabama.

Mcllwain is a former college quarterback at South Carolina and Cal.

I think a sale will happen before opening day 2021.

The important thing is selling it to someone that can take control before the trading season begins.

We also need someone willing to go further into debt by signing the likes of Realmuto and trading for Arenado.

Not asking for much....

I have heard that there's a possibility that a few of these bidders will be corralled together to create a single partnership group, like a larger version of the group originally put together by Doubleday and Wilpon 40 years ago. That may or may not include J-Rod, but let's hope it does not. The 76ers owners never really wanted the team at current or near current market price- they wanted to swoop in and get a bargain deal. THat is not going to happen as the Wilponzi's need every dollar they can muster out of the deal. Now they are asking for a forbearance of their $250 mil debt that's due this year so they can make the sale happen. You can guarantee that it will.

The Mets had their chance to acquire Realmuto after the 2018 season, but they didn't want to meet the asking price. They had a chance to acquire Arenado too, but they really didn't make an attempt to do so.
