I'm of the opinion that you can't burn all your bridges for what's essentially an extended exhibition season. That includes squandering a year of eligibility on top prospects. No one in AAA that is truly a part of the future is in that group. So use the ones who are likely to contribute like Matt Blackham while preserving that extra year of eligibility for the Andres Gimenez types who will lose that full year while sitting on the bench behind Amed Rosario and Luis Guillorme.
How many of the additional 5 can be pitchers? New lease on life for Paul Sewald and Tyler Bashlor, and perhaps the last chance for both. I think Oswalt sneaks into the top 30. David Peterson should be on the 30. Maybe Ali Sanchez for his superior late game defense.
Pat Mazeika was very solid this spring and a lefty bat, so I would at least have him on the taxi squad as a back up catcher.
Ronny Mauricio? Again, it is 10 months since the end of last season, and guys mature. Maybe there are injuries and they have a reasonably ready Mauricio in September.
I would try to move pitchers off and on the taxi squad as much as possible. That way, I could have more position players who were one dimensional - good hit or good glove. I would then play as many of the good glove players as much as possible, pinch hitting them with one of the good hit players when possible. For example, carry just 9 pitchers each game that's 1 starter and 8 relief pitchers (don't think you'd need more than that. The carry 4 catchers - Ramos, Rivera, Nido, Sanchez. Start Nido - should he come up with men on base pinch hit Cespedes or Adams. Then, bring in Sanchez, if he comes up with men on base, pinch hit Ramos. If you have the lead in the ninth and want better D for the 9th, bring in Rivera. Best defenders defend, best hitters hit. Simple. Make it so Brodie.
