All of a sudden, there’s a bunch of decent first basemen in the organization.

Let’s first start off with the changes. Michel Abreu, who really never did much wrong, but was always just a AAAA player, was released by Buffalo, and Luca Duda made a smart decision to change back to an outfielder.

No big failures, except for the miserable year Nick Evans had. He did finally find his bat late in the season, but he didn’t do himself much good with the lack of stats produced this year. We’ve included the stats of Boston Red Sox Chris Carter, because he will be a Met as soon as the season is over and his stats are definitely impressive.

Pleasant surprises have been the complete turnaround of Ike Davis, who now is solidly entrenched as the Met first baseman to be, Stefan Welsh, who had to jump two levels to find a job, Jeff Flagg, and two kids from the Dominican, Alexander Sanchez and Jeckol De Leon. Sanchez especially looks promising, according to pundits down there.

Eric Campbell had a decent season, but there simply isn’t any room for him at the levels he should be playing at. I would assume they would return him, either to the outfield, or third base, two positions he also plays.

Giovanni Ortiz was someone we had our eye on last year, but he seems to have faded away after a miserable start with the GCL team.

In addition, the Mets traded CL Billy Wagner to the Red Sox for two minor league first basemen, who really makes the roster crowded at this position.

Draft potential: There really isn’t any. Davis will take over this position by, latest, spring of 2011.

Current 2010 Projection:

Mets: Daniel Murphy, Chris Carter, Nick Evans
Buffalo: Ike Davis
B-Mets: Stefan Welsh
Lucy: Eric Campbell, Sam Honeck
Gnats: Jeff Flagg
Clones: open
K-Port: Alexander Sanchez, Eddie Lora
GCL: Jeyckol De Leon

In summary: There seems to be no rush now to send Davis to Queens for 2010. Daniel Murphy can split time with either Nick Evans or Chris carter, both of which can also be the 5th outfielder on the team. This will give Davis a year at AAA to mature and eventually take over the position in 2011.

Mack, great post. I was thinking of doing a similiar past after seeing this shoddy reporting at ESPN: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/sweetspot/0-5-25/Are-Mets-set-at-1B-with-Murphy-.html

Not even a passing mention about Ike Davis. In the end, I think the Mets are fine at 1B as is. Let Murphy have the spot until Ike is ready at some point next year. I would love to see Murphy move into a position where he swings between 1B, 3B and OF like Youkilis does in Boston. It is a perfect role for him, especially if he got some time in the OF in winter ball.

Anyways, great post and I think Stefan Welch could be a Sean Casey type to keep an eye on...
