Raul Reyes connected for a three-run home run in the first inning while Nick Giarraputo blasted a two-run home run in the ninth to help the Sand Gnats past the RiverDogs, 6-1, in front of 4,253 at Riley Park on Sunday night. The win snaps the Sand Gnats season high six-game losing streak.
Reyes wasted no time in hitting his ninth home run of the year as he connected on a Chuck Nolte (4-3) pitch into a gusting wind out toward right center in the top of the first. That would put the Gnats up for good as they led the game wire-to-wire.
Armando Rodriguez (2-1) pitched five innings for the Sand Gnats and recorded six strikeouts in the process en route to his second win. Rodriguez started the sixth by walking Mitch Abeita and Jose Pirela before being removed for Samuel Martinez. Martinez allowed a fielder’s choice to pinch hitter Tommy Baldridge to score Abeita for Charleston’s only run of the game.
Martinez and Mike Lynn combined for four innings of scoreless baseball and allowed four hits with four strikeouts. Lynn, who was drafted out of the College of Charleston last year by the Mets, worked the final two innings for his first save.
Giarraputo’s ninth-inning home run capped a three-hit day for the California native who is hitting .397 since coming back to Savannah. It is his 11th multi-hit game in 19 games with the Gnats and he’s also hit safely in 16 of those 19 games. He now has two home runs and 12 RBI to go along with the .397 average.
The three-hit game for the 18-year-old Flores is his sixth of the year and his 34th multi-hit game of the year. He’s hit safely in 17 of his last 22 games.
Savannah (30-36, 65-71) will play its final game of the 2009 season on Monday at 6:05 p.m. in Charleston. RHP Eric Beaulac (7-7, 2.97) will look to move above .500 for the year as he shoots for his eighth win. The RiverDogs will send RHP Cory Arbiso (4-7, 4.85) to the hill in the season finale.
