Jose Coronado drove in the B-Mets only run with an RBI double in the fourth inning and Jenrry Mejia was roughed up for five runs in four-plus innings in Binghamton’s 6-1 loss at Bowie Tuesday night. The B-Mets were held to just three hits and committed a season-high four errors in the shortcoming.
Down 2-0 heading into the fourth inning, Binghamton (51-83) cut into the Baysox lead. D.J. Wabick led off the frame with a walk against the starter Steve Johnson. With two outs, he took second on a delayed steal to move into scoring position. Then, Coronado lined a double into right-center scoring Wabick, cutting the deficit in half.
Bowie (69-66) countered with a big fifth inning. Matt Angle singled to start off Mejia. Carlos Rojas followed with a routine ground ball to third that went through the legs of Zach Lutz, the second of his two errors. Josh Bell made Lutz and Mejia pay with an RBI single to center, lengthening the lead to 3-1.
Mejia exited after the single, giving way to Julio De La Cruz. After De La Cruz induced a groundout from Eric Crozier, Brandon Waring lifted off for a three-run homer to left, giving the Baysox a five-run cushion. Waring went 2-3 with a double and a homer and drove in five of Bowie’s six runs.
Mejia was charged with his fifth loss. The 19-year old allowed five runs, three earned, in four innings on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Johnson notched his second win since joining the Baysox after being traded from the Dodgers July 30. He struck out eight men over six innings and allowed just one run on two hits. Brian Parker followed him with a three-inning save in his AA debut.
The three-game set with Baysox continues Wednesday night. The B-Mets will send LHP Eric Niesen (3-6, 5.24) to the mound and Bowie will counter with RHP Rhoyei Tanaka (4-2, 2.23). The first pitch is slated for 7:05 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show
