Late Edition: Wright, Santana, Jose, Johan... and M&M

David Wright:

Has he really added as much muscle as has been reported? The media ain't lyin'. I got a good look at Mr. Wright on Tuesday and it's obvious he isn't going to lay down and let Citi Field's vast outfield prairie keep destroying his home run totals. Wright is up to a rock-solid 206 pounds — he reminds me of one of those old M.U.S.C.L.E. figures because of his medium-sized frame — but whether or not that allows him to return to hitting 25+ homers a year remains to be seen. For his part, Wright says he just wants to be in the best shape as possible, whether or not that translates to higher power numbers.

Johan Santana:

Really the best pitcher in the NL East? Santana says he is, but Roy Halladay and a nation of Phillies fans are eager to prove the Mets lefty wrong on the field. Personally, I think the two are like peanut butter and chocolate. At their best, it's near impossible for me to choose one over the other at his best and combining the two is going to produce incredible results. Hopefully they'll face each other a lot this year.

Jose Reyes:

Where will Jose Reyes hit in the lineup? The correct answer here would be "Who cares, so long as he's in it in the first place?" But Jerry Manuel's resurrection of the idea to hit Reyes third has caused plenty of debate in New York and it'll be interesting to see if Manuel sticks with the idea or abandons it like he did last season. With Carlos Beltran out until late April or early May, I bet Manuel's mad experiment will see the light of day.

Johan Santana:

Does the rotation still stink once you get past Santana? Pretty much. Mike Pelfrey took a big step back in 2009 and John Maine(notes) hasn't been healthy since 2007. Oliver Perez, meanwhile, is doing nothing but wasting financial resources. There's a chance those three could jump over the low expectations we've set for them, but the Mets would've been much better served had they not completely failed in a pitching market that contained both high-priced talent and more affordable value options.

M&M:

Is this the last hurrah for Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya? With a contract that expires as the end of the season, Manuel is in a more dangerous position should the team falter out of the gate. Minaya's deal goes through 2012, but it's tough to imagine Fred Wilpon could stick with him past another awful season. The team's financial situation may or may not be dire, but continuing to anger fans would hurt the bottom line even more.
