3/6/10

LeVon Washington, Jack Armstrong, Kyle Blair, Ty Linton... and Deck McGuire

Levon Washington:

3-6 from XMLBScout - link  - Got to see LeVon Washington today a double dip for Chipola JC vs Gordon JC out of Georgia. He's making contact, however, I didn't see the blazing speed I'm accustomed to seeing, although he did get down the line once at 4.1 from the leftside which is plus, arm strength still well below average, good range in center, tracks the ball just ok, not real instinctive, displayed no power during bp or in the game, he's going to have to rely on his speed. Program listed him at 6'0 175, he's more like 5'10 and 175. Definitely not the same tools I've seen before, however, he's still worthy of early round consideration, first round though? No way unless this year is down on positional players, which thus far after seeing only 10 games this year, it's not very thin, some decent arms and some decent bats.

Jack Armstrong:

3-4 from Keith Law of espn.com: - •Jack Armstrong: He has many things going for him: big league lineage (his dad, Jack, was a Major League pitcher), athleticism (he's a legitimate college basketball prospect) and a tall and lean projectable frame. He's also shown two good offerings he can throw for strikes. He's got some life to the fastball, with some sink down in the zone.

Kyle Blair:

3-3 from: http://baseballdraftreport.com/:  - Sunday Night Notes (2/28/10) - San Diego’s JR RHP Kyle Blair was what you might call “effectively wild” on Sunday: 6.1 IP 3 H 3 ER 6 BB 11 K

Ty Linton:

2-25 from www.baseballamerica.com: - 2010 Preseason High School All-Americans - THIRD TEAM -
OF Ty Linton, Charlotte Christian School Sr. .456 103 42 47 7 3 11 50 7 North Carolina

Deck McGuire:

About 15-18 scouts were on hand to see the game action, though, as Deck McGuire was the main attraction. Let’s jump into the game action, as much of everything else before the game was not worth mentioning. McGuire started out the first inning with a bit of a bump, as he hung a 90 mph fastball to Rutgers center fielder and leadoff hitter Mike Lang. I was interested in how Lang was going to look, and outside of a smoked double on that hanging fastball, he was downright horrible. You would hope that any top ten round possibilities can hit a hanging 90 mph fastball, so that was nothing special, but the rest of the day told me that Lang is going to struggle against quality pitching. For the rest of the inning, McGuire sat 90-91 with average movement on his fastball, and his command of it was bad. He snapped off a 73 mph curve, which was decent in shape, but in general he looked uncomfortable in getting his arm going. He was saved by the plus range and speed of Georgia Tech center fielder Jeff Rowland on tracking down a liner in left center field. After some unluckiness on a Jaren Matthews infield single off the very end of his bat, McGuire finally finished off the inning by inducing a line out to right fielder Chase Burnette. McGuire didn’t look too good in the first inning, and I was wondering if I was going to get to see how he handled things when his stuff wasn’t great. - link
