Reyes Scratched 2x, Brian McRae, Eri Yoshida, Top 50 List... and Let The Battles Begin

Reyes Scratched 2:

Jose Reyes is headed to New York to have his thyroid levels checked. Reyes was mysteriously scratched from a spring game Friday morning, and now we have the reason. According to the Mets, who held a small press conference Friday, further physical tests related to Reyes' surgically-repaired hamstring revealed an overactive thyroid. The test in New York isn't' until Monday, so we'll all have to be patient and hope for the best.

Brian McRae:

Former New York Mets and 10-year major league veteran Brian McRae is a guest columnist for Mets360.com. This week he answers the question: Is the length of Spring Training just right ot too long? As Arizona and Florida for the first weekend of Spring Training games, I often have to answer the question about the proper time it takes for a player to get ready for the season. Spring training used to be time for... - link

Eri Yoshida:

Eri Yoshida is the first female professional baseball player to be drafted and signed in her native Japan. Standing a mere five-foot one-inch tall, she may be diminutive in stature, but her dreams and desire are very large. After a year in an Independent League in her homeland, she made the trip to the United States to compete in the Arizona Winter League for the Yuma Scorpions and attempt to attract the attention of major league scouts. Since then, Eri has attended Spring Training workouts and had the opportunity recently to meet with her mentor and have him critique her mastery.

As remarkable as all of this is, it should be noted that the meeting with Wakefield this past week was the first coaching Ms. Yoshida would receive on the pitch. She has mastered the craft simply by watching video of her idol. Her delivery is a sidearm one, completely unusual for a knuckleballer as the primary focus of the pitch is to avoid spinning or rotation of any kind. - link

Let The Battles Begin:

Lots of great developments already in Mets camp.

Ike Davis served notice with a bomb, but realistically he has no shot to take first base out of camp...or does he?
Today the Mets have a split squad, with Fernando Nieve to face the Cardinals in Jupiter, Fla. Young lefty Jon Niese, who threw two strong innings in Monday's intrasquad scrimmage, will remain at Tradition Field to face the Fish.

This will be the first we've seen of Nieve. Though everything I'm hearing pegs Nieve for the bullpen, he could surprise and is still seen as a possibility for the SP5 - link
