CUTNPASTE: - Nails, Dan Warthan, Miller on Omar... and Frenchy

Nails:

latimes  - At age 47, the Nails who posed bare-chested for an '80s-era New York Mets glamour poster has turned beefy and grizzled. He has a thatch of graying hair and is missing several teeth. His marriage has crumbled. His baseball pals have made themselves scarce. The bejeweled 1986 World Series ring was pawned, then sold. Still, like those days on the diamond, Dykstra has proved he's not going down without a fight. He has challenged the bankruptcy proceedings at nearly every juncture and has managed to keep creditors away for months. At times representing himself, Dykstra argues that he could right his finances if he were allowed to pursue lawsuits against various parties. Court officials, creditors and former associates say the ex-ballplayer is in over his head and should submit to the unwinding of his once-gilded existence.

 Dan Warthan:

nydn  - In another indication that third base coach Chip Hale and pitching coach Dan Warthen have a strong chance of returning to the major league staff next season, the Mets have asked both to sit tight after their contracts expire November 1, according to sources. The requests come as no surprise; after the team cut ties with Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya Monday, it was clear that ownership still valued Hale and Warthen. The Mets structure their coaches' contracts to run out on November 1, making for potentially awkward timing this year. The team hopes to hire a GM by the end of October, and empower that person to select a manager. The Mets will not make final decisions on coaches until choosing a manager, which does not seem likely to happen by the end of the month.

 Miller on Omar:

metsparadise  - As I wrote a couple months ago in evaluating Minaya, his tenure as Mets GM was very up and down. He made a lot of right moves, and made the Mets relevant again. Again, as I wrote in the post, while all that is great, none of that matters now. As the Fred and Jeff Wilpon said today, this is New York, and you must win. If you don't win, your past doesn't matter. While I wrote in that post that really Omar should go because the deals he gave Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo, it was more than just that , if you look over the moves Minaya made, he didn't exactly know which direction to go. At times, it looked like he was trying to rebuild, and times it looked like he was trying to get a championship now. While the Wilpons and Minaya said they want to build there team around pitching and defense, Minaya goes out and signs Jason Bay, a power hitter, with bad knees, and certainly not a good defender (at least that was our impression), while Carl Crawford, the perfect player for Citi Field is going to be a free agent in the off season.

 Jeff Francoeur:

.rotoworld.  - Jeff Francoeur will start in right field and bat seventh in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Rays on Wednesday afternoon. As expected. David Price isn't your normal left-hander, but Francoeur batted .300 with four home runs and 18 RBI in 120 at-bats against southpaws during the regular season. Playing the matchups, Rangers manager Ron Washington will also go with Jorge Cantu at first base.
