Cutnpaste: - Jason Bay, Dan Uggla, Backman Video, Sabermetrics and Melvin, and Scott Kazmir

Michael G. Baron
Jason Bay:

Although at times it seemed like the Sox could have more easily avoided the comedy of errors that occasionally passed for its outfield by hiring random beer-imbibing fans from the bleachers, there was an option that many Sox fans were clamoring for the previous off-season: Jason Bay. After all, this was the guy that hit 36 HR with 119 RBI and a robust 0.921 OPS, and even flashed a bit of speed with 13 swipes in 16 chances. Okay, sure, his bat disappeared for most of June and July, but all the signs were that he would patrol the Sox’s left field for the next few years. It later surfaced, of course, that the Sox rescinded the original offer once doubts were raised about Bay’s knees to survive a four-year contract. The Sox then reduced the deal to two years, after which Bay secured the four-year, $66 million deal he was looking for with the Mets.  - over the monster

Dan Uggla:

After breaking off extension talks and gauging interest in their second baseman, the Marlins now plan to trade Dan Uggla, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Rosenthal identifies the Nationals, Tigers, Braves, and Blue Jays as potential suitors involved in discussions for the 30-year-old. - MLBTR

Backman Video:

This video is the only one on the entire internet that (a) features Met managerial candidate Wally Backman but isn’t also (b) riddled with invective.

Other videos, such as this one of Backman getting ejected from a game during his one-year stint as manager of the unaffiliated South Georgia Peanuts, appear to be some kind of amazing Dadaist experiment in filth.

Note: while all the videos are pretty excellent, they’re suitable for work if and only if you’re employed as an insult comic. - fangraphs

Sabermetrics and Melvin:

I have no doubt that even the most traditional organization will one day have a small army of quants analyzing their every move. The sabermetric sales pitch to front offices will have to be successful, because front-office personnel are coming from walks of life where a data-driven approach is the norm. Shiraz Rehman, director of baseball operations for the Arizona Diamondbacks, was a commodities trader and financial consultant in his previous life. As a panelist on the baseball analytics discussion, he said that the Diamondbacks have a database with information and video clips of every pitch thrown. They query this database not only for evaluative purposes, but also for advance scouting and game planning. Almost every team uses a similar system. - mets fever

Scott Kazmir:
Trade: Sent to Tampa Bay in Victor Zambrano deal

After trade: 66 Wins, 106 ERA+, 993 Ks

Analysis – Poor trade for Mets. Injuries have kept this from becoming the second Nolan Ryan deal but with Kazmir on the team it is likely they would have made the playoffs in both 2007 and 2008. And while Kazmir had a down year in 2010, he will only be 27 next year and still has time to turn things around. - 360mets
