Mets May Get Young! Chris Young, that is!!

By David Rubin

In one of my posts 2 weeks ago, I mentioned that I thought Chris Young would be a good addition to the Mets 2011 pitching staff, since a.) he's coming back from injury and has something to prove, b.) would command less $$$ then if he had been healthy, c.) pitched well in the large confines of Petco, and d.) comes from the Padres, the former stomping grounds of new Mets' VP, Paul DePodesta.

Well, it looks like the Mets might make Young their first off-season player acquisition, as ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that the Mets are close to making a deal with Young. If that's the case, I still see them bringing in at least one more lower-cost option for the rotation, as we still don't know if Dillon Gee truly factors into their plans as a starter next season. (And, in the meantime, since he's so tall, maybe we can get him to play center for the Knicks!!)

The "Hot Stove" is finally heating up in Queens!!

The most important part of a transaction like this is the fact that it would take the pressure off of rushing Jenrry Mejia back to Queens, this time as a starter.

Mejia is one of only three B+ pitching prospects (Matt Harvey, Juan Urbina) in the system and everyone would be best served if he remains in Buffalo for the 2011 season.

Judging on this report, it seems safe to assume the Mets will add someone to the rotation, so I am going to re-project Mejia back on the Buffalo roster.

I sure HOPE that's what they do, Mack- they still need to sign another "arm" for the rotation, to either backstop against the health of the current group, or in lieu of Gee as the 5th starter.

Terry Collins said he thought the Mets rushed Mejia last season- at least he has the courage of his convictions- and an additional year on his contract- to hold to that!!

AND- he's married to former Ranger exec/coach Craig Patrick'S daughter, making her the great-grand-daughter of Lester Patrick, whom the NHL's Patrick Division is named after.

AND he's an Ivy Leaguer, from Princeton. It's not Columbia, but hey- what IS??

Also hearing from multiple sources that the Mets aren't as close to signing Young as Olney implied- but are still very serious.

We shall see...
