The Mack Draft Report – Scrimmage News, Tommy Kupfer, Anthony Rendon, Ricky Orepresa, and more

Nov. 14, 2010

Scrimmage News: - UNLV Team Scarlet 11, Team Black 2… Tanner Peters: 4.0-IP, 1-H, 2-K, 0-R… Richie Jimenez: 5-5, 3-R, 4-RBI… Cory Welsh: run scoring single…

New Prospect: - My friend XMLBScout added a new name to his 2011 prospect list, Omaha Roncalli High School LHP Tommy Kupfer.

In X’s own words: “Joe is 6'4 and weighs in around 210 lbs, he throws from a H 3/4 arm slot downhill in the upper 80's and has touched 92 on occ, fb runs and sinks when down and he's got a nasty slider that is getting better. I have not seen Joe pitch since he was a junior in HS at Roncalli and recently got a film of him pitching in Alaska during the summer and after talking to a few colleagues of mine who scout in Illinois, they were hoping Joe was going to be one of those lefties that was low profiled, but that cat is out of the bag now! Joe is a junior at Bradley University, in Peoria IL and will be one of the most coveted lefties in the Mo Valley in 2011. “

Over at http://www.tossitaround.com/ , Dave Land finished his top 70 picks, but it’s flawed. I assume that he has only ranked players he has seen, since guys like Matt Purke, Taylor Jungmann, Dylan Bundy, Alex Meyer, and Jack Armstrong didn’t make his list. I emailed him for an explanation, but, to date, I got the same answer Anderson Cooper kept getting from BP Oil. Anyway, I have removed his list from my mock survey, but here’s part of what he said about his number one pick, 3B Anthony Rendon:

“ Anthony Rendon has solidified himself as the top college baseball player in the nation and is working hard to become the number 1 selection in the 2011 draft. Rendon was selected in the 27th round of the 2008 draft by the Atlanta Braves. Heading to college and passing up on pro baseball has proven to be one of the best decisions that he has made. He has made a name for himself in his 2 years on campus so far and he has made it so that teams will not be able to pass him up when the 2011 draft rolls around next June. He has the ability to become the next superstar at the major league level, he will not have to wait very long to hear his name called on draft day.”

http://www.collegebaseballdaily.com/2010/11/13/top-100-countdown-65-ricky-oreposa-usc  continues their great series and ranked USC junior, Ricky Oreposa, as the 65th top college player in the country. Brian Foley wrote:

“As a senior, he batted .563 (36-for-64) with six home runs, six doubles, two triples and 16 RBI. He was an Aflac High School All-American and rated as the No. 108 high school player in the nation by Baseball America. Perfect Game rated him as the No. 2 third baseman in the nation and No. 18 for first basemen heading into the 2008 MLB Draft.”

Other News:

Ryan Keller:- 10-31-10 from: - http://www.diamondscapescouting.com/2010.10.01_arch.html - Ryan Keller (West Ranch HS, Valencia, Calif.), a physical 6-foot-3, 210-pound righthander, started for the ABD Bulldogs and worked in the 87-90 mph range, peaking at 91, with a snappy 75-76 curveball. He has a quick arm and throws with little effort, but scouts will be hoping to see more velocity in the spring.

Nigel Cook
Peter O’Brien: - 11-11-10 from: - http://xmlbscout.angelfire.com/  - # 9 - C Pete O'Brien Bethune-Cookman U 6'2 210 R/R - quality receiver with above ave arm and release, most are in the 1.9 or less pop time range, quick on his feet and alert, handles good velocity pitches well as evidenced during 2010 TEAM USA games. Has plus power and ability to hit for average at ML level - right handed version of Brian McCann. He's put his college team mates and the program at BCU on the map for years to come.

Michael Papi: - 11-5-10: - http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=5095  – WWBA stars - OF Michael Papi (Baseball U.): Papi has been at all the biggest events during the last 6 months; the PG National, East Coast Pro, the Area Code Games, the WWBA 17U National Championships, Jupiter. He’s been stunningly consistent at all those events, showing a powerful left handed swing, right field arm strength and good speed for a 6-3, 190 lb athlete. When I think of profiles like that, I think of another player from the Northeast, former Yankee great Paul O’Neill.
