PRESS RELEASE: Mets Coaching Changes

The New York Mets today announced that Bench Coach Ken Oberkfell, Third Base Coach Chip Hale, First Base Coach Mookie Wilson and Bullpen Coach Jon Debus will not return to the major league club for the 2012 season.
Tim Teufel will take over as Third Base Coach and Ricky Bones will become Bullpen Coach. Hitting Coach Dave Hudgens and Pitching Coach Dan Warthen will return to Manager Terry Collins’ staff in the same positions next year.

Hale declined an offer to remain on Collins’ staff to pursue another Major League coaching opportunity. Wilson and Debus will be offered other positions within the organization.

Teufel was the Manager of the Buffalo Bisons (AAA) of the International League for the 2011 season and Bones was Pitching Coach.

The Mets will announce further additions to the Major League coaching staff in the coming weeks.

Very interesting. Guess Wally gets a bump to Buffalo. Here's hoping they hire some great teachers that'll really help their future young incoming core progress quickly and flourish apon their arrival over the next few seasons. Have some theories about Mookie's firing, but that might have been a Collins move behind closed doors. Maybe the FO is making sure the fans know that having a history with the team will not make a difference moving forward. Might sound stupid, but I'm feeling a connection here between getting rid of Wilson, a fan favorite and icon, who was in the Mets' most infamous play, and perhaps and offseason of trading away a homegrown talent that has anchored this ship since 2004 and letting the SS sign a big contract elsewhere. Let the fans get used to the idea that no one is safe. I see some bold moves coming. I see the farm system becoming stocked like never before. I see Wright, Reyes, and Pelfrey out the door.

What I understand is the Mets front office wasn't that happy with the way Mookie was working with Duda.

I expect Wilson to remain as a rover.

Wally is NOT in the running for bench manager - buffalo seems correct.

Tuff is next in line
