Source: Jose Could Play 3B For Marlins

Just got off the phone...

One of my sources told me "if Jose signs with Miami, don't be surprised he doesn't play third base".

He also said that Hanley Ramirez is adamant about remaining at shortstop, even though he wants his best friend on the team. Remember, both Jose and Hanley are Godfather's to each other's children. They are that close.

Why not second? His skills should keep him up the middle. Instantly becomes best second baseman in the majors. Still, hard to believe he'd play a different position. Thought he should maintain control here. Why make any concessions? On my team, the best SS, would play SS. Anyway, if true, Sandy did whats best here. The Mets can't afford constantly paying millions to players on the DL. Which is inevitable with Reyes.

2B is a waste of his arm.

I was actually thinking of CF. He has the range and his arm is not a question.

Having great range in a second baseman, taking away a lot of hits, is better then a strong arm at third.

Like the CF idea, but could he handle that with just spring training to make the.switch?

You need a fourth option for this post: depressing. Ugh.

Depressing isnt that they lost him. Depressing is that they didnt have the funds to keep him. Would've felt alot better if they had the cash and yet still passed on Jose. I'd have actually felt like that was a baseball decision. That wasnt the case here. They simply couldn't afford him and thats why they passed. They couldn't spend all of their money this offseason on one player. Having a NY team need to make this big of a decision on a homegrown player based on keeping a payroll under 100 million is whats depressing.

I completely agree, Charles, you've slammed that nail directly on its head. It is 10x worse that they have to base this decision due to lack of funds, that that's what it comes down to. We're not even in the position to say, 'no thanks, I'll pass', it's 'sorry, we can't afford you 'cuz we're broke.' I don't understand the owners---who do they think is going to show up to see these lackluster games? I get emails from Mets/Citifield constantly promoting various events ('Sign up for a Tour of Citifield!') I thought, what?? This is what they're peddling in the off-season? I'm a fan, I've been to Citifield lots of times, as I'm sure many fans have, why would I want a tour?? It makes me wonder just how desperate their financial situation is. (we know how bad it is, of course, but these constant reminders are startling.)

Got a few calls slamming my "source" statement...

Quoting a source is a difficult task. This source could be Ozzie. It also could be the janitor.

You have to judge a writer, when he or she quotes a source" on his or her accuracy in the past.

I screwed up once naming the fact that the Mets were going to have 3 VPs replace Omar, but I had the wrong names.

I was correct and was the only person in baseball for two days that said Ollie Perez would resign with the Mets that Saturday.

We usuaully avoid source material unless we feel it is 99% accurate. It can only hurt a writer if it is wrong.

And money wise or "hits".... yeah, maybe I'll make $682 this year instead of $672

Honestly, this is what happens with a "come back to us later after you are done shopping" method. The fans will not be happy.

I know, and don't think they don't too. They know they're in for another horrid year with extremely low attendence, decreasing revenue, and a screaming fanbase tired of loosing while every team in our division continues to make strides. They know infusing this team with some better players would ideally calm the storm. But they don't have the money to even make good, financially sound acquisitions on players who could really make a positive difference. I don't think they even have the money to pay the players they already have. Thats why they're trying to sell pieces of the team(at a really slow pace for some reason).
