April 19th 2014 - Braves 7, Mets 5

Justin Upton’s 3 run homer in the top of the 9th inning off Jose Valverde proved to be too much to overcome as the Mets lose a slugfest with the Braves Saturday night 7-5. The Mets were trailing 4-1 going to the bottom of the eighth.  Chris Young and Travis d’Arnaud had RBI singles to make it 4-3. After Upton’s homer the Mets trailed 7-3 going to the bottom of the 9th.  David Wright had an RBI double and Chris Young added an RBI single off Craig Kimbrel to make it a 2 run margin.  Jordan Walden came on and retired Travis d’Arnaud with the bases loaded to end the rally. In the bottom of the first The Mets took a one nothing lead thanks to a walk by Eric Young Jr, his 10th stolen base and an RBI single by David Wright, in the 3rd inning Barolo Colon fielded Freddie Freeman’s infield single and threw it down the right field line bringing in 2 runs giving the Braves the lead. Freeman, who is taking over where Chipper Jones left off as a Met killer, drove in the Braves 3rd run in the 5th with an RBI double.  Daisuke Matsuzaka made his 2014 debut in the 8th and allowed the 4th Braves run to score on a wild pitch. Colon had the one bad inning but pitched well going 7 innings allowing 8 hits 3 runs, all earned he walked 1 and struck out 6.   Ervin Santana shut down the Mets for the second time this year going 7, allowing just 6 hits 1 run, it was earned, 2 walks and 7 strike outs.  Colon takes the loss he falls to 1-3, Santana got the win and improves to 2-0. Freeman is on fire going 3 for 4 on the night and now 6 for 8 in the two games so far.  Even so, the Mets out hit the Braves 13 to 11.  David Wright, Daniel Murphy and Chris Young each had 3 hits apiece. Wright and C. Young added 2 RBI apiece as well. Wrights single in the first extended his hitting streak to 10 games. It’s the third appearance in a row where Valverde has allowed a late inning homer. The loss drops the Mets to one game under .500 at 8-9. The Mets still have a tough time winning at Citi Field as their record in Queens falls to 2-6 on the young season. Sunday afternoon the Mets look to grab the rubber game from Atlanta.  Zach Wheeler (1-2 4.67) toes the rubber for the Mets. David Hale 0-0 2.89) goes for the Braves.

Another lesson...

1. This is a flawed team. They went into it needing bats, a cleanup hitter, relief pitchers, and a shortstop. They left needing the same things.

2. There are good signs... the team scored enough runs and had enough hits to win... Wright is almost back... Duda is holding his own... d'Arnaud has hit well over the last 20 at-bats... and Chris Young is a breath of fresh air.

3. I don't expect the Mets to sit Granderson, but move him down to the 5 hoe (or 6) until his bat wakes up

4. Promote Flores and give him SS (I'll write more on this on Monday)

5. It's time for most of the old men to depart... stick with Farnsworth while he pitches well, but bring back Black and consider Thornburg... promote the kids in Binghamton (Kolarek, Leathersich, Church) that need to cut their bones in Vegas.

6. Build your pen around 2-inning stints by Torres... he may be the most important pitcher you have down there.
