Bradenton 1 - St. Lucie 0

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (April 4, 2019) – The Bradenton Marauders shut out the St. Lucie Mets 1-0 on Opening Day at First Data Field on Thursday.

The Marauders scored the game’s lone run in the fifth inning on sacrifice fly by Chris Sharpe. The Mets looked like they might have a play at the plate, but rehabbing catcher Travis d’Arnaud could not scoop right fielder Quinn Brodey’s throw and Lucas Tancas slid home safely.

Three Mets pitchers mowed through the Marauders lineup. Starter Kevin Smith (0-1) tossed 4.2 innings and allowed four hits and one run. He walked one and struck out six.

Carlos Hernandez pitched 2.1 scoreless innings.

PC - Ed Delany
Ryley Gilliam pitched two scoreless innings and struck out five batters.

Bradenton starter Domingo Robles (1-0) earned the win. He blanked the Mets over six strong innings and limited St. Lucie to two hits.

The Mets had a great chance to tie or take the lead in the eighth. They had runners on second and third with one out. Desmond Lindsay grounded a ball to third and Brodey got caught in a run down between home and third base for the second out. D’Arnaud followed with a walk to load the bases. However, the rally ended when Luis Escobar struck out the rehabbing Todd Frazier.

D’Arnaud and Frazier played the entire game. D’Arnaud went 1 for 3 with a single and a walk. Frazier split his time between third base and first base. He was 0 for 4 with a strikeout.

Brodey and Carlos Cortes had two of the Mets three hits.

The Mets (0-1) and Marauders (1-0) continue their series at First Data Field on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.

Ya gotta be excited by the pitching efforts of Kevin Smith and Ryley Gilliam...both pitched terrifically.

I enjoyed watching Kevin Smith. Kept them off balance for 4 innings. Lots of soft contact. Went off the rails a bit in the 5th.
May have to keep an eye on Dominican Carlos Hernandez too. I believe he threw 3 different pitches all for strikes. Topped 94 MPH.
Ryley Gilliam was insane. They might one day be discussing and comparing his curveball spin rate to that of Lugo. Unreal. Pumps strikes.

That was very nice of them to do Ernest.

It's a tribute to your positive attitude and all you have done for that team.
