Good
morning.
Prior
to this week’s opening games, the Mets released the following minor league
players:

Renick:
IF
J.J. Franco – The 27-year old primarily played at second base, though he
has logged time at third and in left. Was originally a 38th round
pick by the Braves in 2014 and joined the Mets organization in 2017. Was always
used in a utility way. Best Mets year: 2018 St. Lucie – 81-AB, .296.
IF
Malvin Nunez – The 19-year old hit .202 for the
Mets DSL team last season.
IF
Andres Parra – The 19-year old Parra hit .206
for the 2018 DSL-1 team

Mayer:
LHP
Sean Burnett – The 36-year old signed with the
Mets organization after going 1-2, 5.49 in 17-games for the AAA-Baby Cakes of the PCL.
Others...
OF
Raphael Gladu – The 23-year old was a 16th
round pick by the Mets in the 2017 draft. He had his chance last year, getting
330 at-bats for combined Columbia/St. Lucie. Guess hitting .261 didn’t hack it.
RHP
Miguel Ramirez – Big question marks go out on
this one. He pitched 2017 (20/yrs old) for the DSL team and went 6-2, 1.75, in
14-starts. Last year, at 21/yrs. old, he goes 0-1, 2.60 in 17-games for the
GCL-Mets. Maybe age is the factor here.
RHP
Boris Sanchez – Another player that could have
been affected by his age, Sanchez pitched 15-appearances, 3.86, for the
GCL-Mets. He was scheduled to pitch 2019 as a 22-year old.
OF
Patricio Diaz – Diaz was a 2017 $100K international
bonus baby that hit only .207 (0-HR) for the DSL Mets.
OF
Jean Carlos Soto – Soto was a 2016 $150K
International bonus baby who hit only .213 for the 2018 DSL Mets.

Gabriel Llanes – became a free agent at the end

In addition to this list of players,
the following players did not make the 25-man squad of any of the four full
season minor league franchises. Some may be on a specific team’s IL, while others could be back in Extended Camp getting more rehab before joining a team, a bunch got released or are otherwise gone, and, for now, some are missing in action:
Pitchers
–
Zach Lee (now a Durham Bull)
Catchers
-
Jose Mena
Infielders
–
Christian Colon (now in Cincy Reds AAA), Ruben
Tejada, Cody Asche (free agent who hit .230 in AAA in 2018)
Outfielders
–
Zack Rheams, Gerson Molina
It appears that Brodie cleaned house in AA - several 2018 players have been released or elected free agency: IFs Josh Allen, Andrew Ely, and Kevin Taylor, OFs John Mora and Patrick Biondi, and 1B Joey Terdoslovich. The latter hit well in 74 AA games last year (.308/.368/.472), but is now 30 - time marches on.

It was nice to see the Mets let J.J. Franco get in a late spring training game, knowing it was his swan song.
Kevin Taylor had very solid seasons in 2016 and 2017 after signing with the Mets, but regressed a bit in AA in 2018 - it is a TOUGH business. Many sign contracts, few make it.
Unrelated, but saw this in a NY Times article on O's awful Chris Davis:
After whiffing in all three of his at-bats in Thursday’s loss to the Yankees, Davis fell to 0-for-17 on the season with 11 strikeouts.
On Sept. 14, 2018, Davis lined a double. He hasn’t recorded a hit since, a stretch of 38 consecutive at-bats.
As for Davis, he led the major leagues in home runs as recently as 2015.
On the other hand, he’s in the fourth season of a seven-year, $161 million contract
Take it to the bank Davis... or, I guess, they wire transfer it now...
The Orioles must wish they had Dominic Smith to play 1B instead.
In 2011, in the minors in 50 games, he hit 24 homers, had 66 RBIs, and hit .372/.413/.819.
In 2013, 53 HRs.
In 2015 and 2016, 85 homers.
In 2017, 18, and 19 in the majors, 177 for 943 (.187) with 398 Ks.
What a fall he's had.
Maybe he's replaced Jason Bay as the poster child for poor long-term deals.
