Charlotte 6 - St. Lucie 1

PC - Ed Delany

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (May 31, 2019) – The Charlotte Stone Crabs homered their way to a 6-1 victory over the St. Lucie Mets at Charlotte Sports Park on Friday night.

Taylor Walls hit a three-run homer in the first inning on the sixth pitch thrown by Mets starter Dedniel Nunez.

Jim Haley hit a two-out, two-run home run off of Nunez in the third inning for a 5-0 lead.

That was plenty of support for Stone Crabs starter Joe Ryan, who only allowed three batters to reach base over 6.2 innings. He gave up just two singles and hit one batter while striking out eight.

The Mets avoided a shutout in the ninth when Carlos Cortes tripled to center field and Quinn Brodey brought Cortes home on a ground out.

Brodey went 1 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. His RBI in the ninth was his FSL-best 36th of the season.

Nunez took the loss. He allowed six runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings.

Ezequiel Zabaleta and Conner O’Neil combined for a 2.1 scoreless innings out of the Mets bullpen.

Charlotte improved to 4-0 vs. the Mets this season. The Mets lost their third consecutive game to fall back under .500 for the first time since May 16th.

The Mets (26-27) and Stone Crabs (28-26) play the middle game of their series at Charlotte Sports Park on Saturday. First pitch is 6 p.m.
