Tom Brennan - Is Jake Marisnick Really Just Keon the Second?

Image result for whiff picture

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss..."

In the 2018 offseason, the Mets traded prospects to get OF Keon Broxton.

In the 2019 off season, the Mets traded prospects to get OF Jake Marisnick.

Has anything changed?

Jake Marisnick is career .227/.280/.380 with a K every 3.3 times up, and solid defense and speed.

Keon Broxton is career .209/.297/.388 with a K every 2.6 times up, with solid defense and speed.

Jake walks just once every 18.6 times up.  Terrible.

Keon walks just once every 9.6 times up, offsetting to a large degree his crazy career strikeout rate when compared to Marisnick's merely bad K rate.

Aren't they really clones?

If so, are we supposed to be at all excited that the Mets got Jake Marisnick?

"Yay!  We Love Mets!  So We love Jake!"  Nah.

Additional Spoiler Alert:

The highly marginal "Captain" Kirk Nieuwenhuis' career splits (.221/.311/.384) and his K every 3.1 times up rate, overall, are slightly better than Jake's. F

Feel excited still?

Me?

Nope.

Whiff the Garbage Engine says whiffs stink!

Seems like "same-old, same-old."

Yours truly,

Debbie Downer.

It was a quik one year defensive fix by a departing GM.

No.

Wait.

It was an ok move that check a box on the shopping list. Jake is probably more like Lagares than Brockton given a slightly loner track record than Deon. He is a somewhat pricey 5th OF given his salary projection and cost of the prospect Taylor. They could have gone cheaper perhaps with a guy like Hamilton. However, this is the kind of move that true contenders make. If he is roster spot 24-26, great. If he is seeing platoon time or serious ABs, then it is the move of a pretender. Go get some legit pitchers and this move will look better. Bargain bin the pitching needs and meh.

This is a good comparison and further reason to consider Marisnick as a 5th OFer and not a platoon partner for someone.

And Marisnick can learn something from Broxton and not pop off about his playing time. The Mets kept him despite his awful production until he ran his mouth. And then a couple of days later he was gone.

Yes, Jake is more like Lag. IMO Lag will not get more than $3m anywhere, and we could've re-signed him instead of trading 2 prospects for Jake.

Yes, they're only "mid-level", but they might've served as part of a package elsewhere. I'd rather have Lag + the 2 than Jake alone.

This dope of a GM trades 2 prospects for a career 227 hitter.
Let's just see what other prospects he trades off during the winter meetings.

Bill. I would have re-signed Lagares to a minor league deal, kept the prospects as well.

Ironically, as you pointed out yesterday or the day before, Lag is having a terrific season in the DR, after a good 2nd half of 2019 here.

Great comments, one and all. Thanks.

I think teams do not want to keep bringing back guys like Lagares, in hopes that THIS will be the year that it clicks for him. Not knowing how good Blake Taylor really is until he pitches for a while in the majors, I can live with Marisnick plus the trade away prospects over bringing Lagares back.

But I agree with TP - if Jake plays more than sparingly, it better be because he is hitting really well - or they are admitting again that they are pretenders.

I will say this - I often discussed with my brother how often we HATED seeing Kirk N on this team because it was a huge sign, as TP put it, that the Mets were pretenders. His low average and high Ks drove us nuts. And Jake has to prove to me he is better than Kirk - or please don't use him more than sparingly. Or I feel we will talk the same way about Marisnick as we did about Kirk. Don't take ANY starts away from bona fide hitter JD Davis to give them to OF Marisnick.

Brian, my guess is that given the pretty high number of career plate appearances of Marisnick, he is a go along, positive guy who won't rock any boats - in other words, smart!

Isn't Marisnick a much better defender when compared to Broxton? Not that it was a great move or anything, but comparing their offensive stats doesn't tell the whole story, IMO.

I like him as a #4 or #5 OF'er, late inning defensive replacement and pinch hitter/runner.......I don't like him as much as the starter in CF.

I'm certainly not looking for this to be "the year Lag clicks", but even coming off his worst year his career #s are at least slightly better than Jake's. And in the 2nd half of last year he hit .261.

We're talking #5 OFer here, and if we could keep one who fits that role at less cost in $$$ and talent, that makes sense to me.

And last year the Mets were 80 and 53 in games Juan played in!!

Tom - who was the first Mets player to hit 3 HRs in a Mets home game? Kirk N. He also hit a big HR against the Nationals in that big series in September in Washington.
