John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 12/14/2020

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday Rick Down and Shaun Marcum. Mets SS Prospect Ronny Mauricio makes his Winter Ball Debut, Mets bring back a former bench coach, and the Cleveland baseball team is changing it’s name.

Section Links: Mets Links, MLB Links, Winter Baseball, and This Day in Mets History.

Mets Links:

NY Post: Mets hire Dave Jauss as bench coach for a second time. “Jauss served as the Mets’ bench coach with manager Jerry Manuel in 2010 and was part of  player development the following season before going to the Pirates in 2012.”

NorthJersey.com: Dave Jauss: 3 things to know about NY Mets' new bench coach. 1. Wide range of experience; 2. A reunion of sorts - In 2010, he served as Jerry Manuel's bench coach. In 2011, he worked as the club's coordinator of staff development. Jauss and Rojas — who joined the Mets in 2006 — worked for the organization at the same time. Now, they'll be in the same dugout; 3. Success runs in the family. His dad Bill? A famous Chicago Tribune sportswriter.

NY Post: Mets’ new GM has hands full with Trevor Bauer, George Springer.

Brian Joura Mets360: Jared Porter and the neuterization of the Mets’ GM job. “…the new GM would have to answer to Alderson...In a way, the new structure is going to do to the GM what the GMs have done to managers in the last couple of decades…The game’s GMs have made managers to be nothing more than press secretaries. Managers are now simply highly-visible flunkies whose main role is to manage perception, in both the clubhouse and in the press briefings.”

Amazing Avenue: Where the Mets’ payroll stands after the James McCann signing. “The consensus seems to be that the Mets will approach the competitive balance (CB) tax threshold but would not exceed that mark. For the 2021 MLB season, the number is set at $210 million…After signing James McCann—assuming the deal will hit at $10 million AAV—the team’s 26-man at right under $150 million, while their 40-man CB tax payroll would be at about $150.2 million, according to Cot’s Contracts.”

Mike’s Mets talks about the weekend happenings in “My Cup Runneth Over”.

SouthSide Showdown: Losing James McCann to Mets is tough. “The White Sox are losing a very important piece to their team with the departure of McCann. He formed the best catching duo in all of Major League Baseball with Yasmani Grandal in 2020.”

Rising Apple: Can Jake Hager escape minor league purgatory in 2021? “The New York Mets signed longtime Triple-A player Jake Hager to a minor league deal… While his main position is shortstop, he has also served time at first and second base. As recently as 2019, Hager has also taken reps in left field to further increase his versatility and value.”

Rising Apple: NY Mets offseason shopping list should include Kiké Hernandez. “Coming off a six-year stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Hernández has proven himself as an elite defender who can be platooned seamlessly across the diamond and the outfield.”

Rising Apple: Mets reunion with Jerry Blevins has its benefit beyond the mound. “His biggest role with the organization might be what he gives them in the locker room.”

CBS Sports: Cleveland Indians to change nickname the franchise has used for more then a century. Cleveland could officially announce its name change plans this week.

Yahoo Sports: Spiders, Rocks or ... Lindors? What should the Cleveland baseball team be called?

MLB.com: 1 future Hall of Famer on each team. For the Mets - Jacob deGrom, RHP: He missed out on his third straight Cy Young, but it sure feels like there might be one or two more in his future.

MLB.com: Are these the two favorites for Bauer? “’All indications that I’m getting from the whispers around baseball is that it’s going to be Mets or Angels,’ [Athletic’s Jim Bowden] the former MLB general manager said Sunday on MLB Network Radio.”

CBS Sports: How J.T. Realmuto's free agent market is shaping up with Mets off list of suitors. Blue Jays, Phillies, Nationals head the list followed by long shots such as the Yankees and Cardinals.

Maybe David Rodriguez and Fargas can stay hot and show us something has changed.

I hope Mauricio is not used as a late inning replacement. We need him to not be hype.

That Betts throw reminded me of one I saw Clemente make in Shea where he went into the right field corner, pivoted and threw a strike to third base on the fly to nail the runner. What an arm.

I am shocked Koosman's WAR would be higher than Whitey Ford's.

Koosman did not get the credit he deserved. For example in the '69 and '73 WS, Koosman was a total of 3-0, 2.39 ERA. Seaver was 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA.

Koosman was a Hall of Famer had he pitched for Cincinnati
