Mack - Weekly Draft Notes

3-19-21 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

Hoglund, Madden, Rocker all over 115 tonight. Let it ride, boys

Mack’s spin -

In March.

And we wonder why their are so many TJS’s.

3-19-21 - Teddy Cahill @tedcahill

Vanderbilt defeat South Carolina, 3-2, to open a key SEC East series.

Kumar Rocker was great again and Luke Murphy closed it out. The Gamecocks have lost five straight.

Tyler Jennings @TylerJennings24

Kumar Rocker's night appears done after 8 masterful innings. 14 strikeouts, 82 strikes (71%), 2 walks. By my count, 32 (!) s/m. Lost velo on broadcast in 6th, but 91-93 in 6th, SL filthy and got plenty of s/m on cutter. Flashed a few CH's too

Mack’s spin -

I am running out of things I can say about this young man.

3-19-21 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

That'll probably do it for Ryan Cusick. Easily the best he's been this season. Fastball settled in 94-97/t99. Control was very good, command is still a work in progress. Curveball was plus, thrown for strikes all night. Worked in a cutter.

5 IP, 7K, 3 H, 2 BB, 0 ER, 89 pitches

Mack’s spin -

Outings like this make for a serious first round candidate.

Love the 99!

3-18-21 - Prospect Live Mock Draft 3.0b-mock-draft-30 -

10) New York Mets - Jud Fabian, OF, Florida

Fabian was among the highest profile bats entering the 2021 season, but he’s sputtered out of the gate. The strikeouts and swing-and-miss in his game have been amplified a bit this season, and it’s something he’ll need to curb should he hope to work his way back up draft boards. The pure talent can be mesmerizing. Fabian’s bat speed is special and his power this season is probably up a grade from where many anticipated. It now grades out plus at the next level. He’s still every bit the above average defensive outfielder with an above average arm too. If Fabian can make more contact and ward off concerns of a below average hit tool, there’s a pretty special player here to be had. - Joe

Mack’s spin -

I would dance a happy dance if Fabian fell into out lap.

He is truly going to be one of the stars in this game.

3-18-21 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

Quality college baseball tonight w/some MLB Draft guys. Florida v. Texas A&M @ 7pm EST.

My ranks:

No. 15 - OF Jud Fabian (UF)

No. 28 - RHP Tommy Mace (UF)

No. 55 - C Nathan Hickey (UF)

No. 110 - LHP Dustin Saenz (A&M)

No. 225 - 1B Kris Armstrong (UF)

No. 329 - OF Jacob Young (UF)

Mack’s spin -

Florida won the game, 13-4. A double and home run by Fabian. A double by Hickey. Saenz went 3-IP, giving up 5-ER. Mace went 7-IP, 2-ER, 11-K for his 4th win (4-0).

3-18-21 - Joe Doyle  @JoeDoyleMiLB

Will Bednar moving into the Mississippi State rotation is pretty important as far as the MLB Draft goes.

Bednar's slider is a huge pitch, comfortably 60+. It's one of the better pitches in the draft. He's 91-94/t97 with a below average/fringy changeup as well.

Mack’s spin -

This is great for Bednar. His draft value is instantly increased.

3-16-21 - Ian Smith   @FlaSmitty

Tennessee SS Liam Spence is a really interesting name for me heading into SEC play.

An Australian born, former JUCO bandit is a pure hitter with a career .362/.470/.530 line. He’s been a rock solid defender at SS and presents above avg speed. Potential late RD steal.

Mack’s spin -

I have nothing on this kid.

Current stat line through 3-16:  17-G, 64-AB, .375, 1.028-OPS

Hmm…

3-15-21 - Joe Doyle - @JoeDoyleMiLB

Another 2021 MLB Draft Show interview for your viewing enjoyment. Here's 10 minutes with Drake Varnado, a super-polished defensive shortstop from Texas who's added weight and louder bat has his upside creeping higher and higher.

Mack’s spin -

Additional paper on Varnado this week.

3-14-21 - Lookout Landing -

I don’t know much about Izaac Pacheco’s personality, attitude or temperament, but the physical tools are absolutely tantalizing. I do think he has one of the higher ceilings in this entire draft class.

Seattle is in the market for infielders, though prep infielders might not be the mold they’re specifically targeting. Jerry Dipoto and Scott Hunter have to really love a prep profile to buy in in the first round. I do think Pacheco is a viable value at pick no. 12. Whether or not he fits the profile they’re looking for remains the question.

Pacheco is likely a day-one selection come July, so Seattle will likely get one crack at the Texas A&M commit before he’s off the board.

Mack’s spin -

There are a handful of really good shortstops in this draft and Pacheco is one of them.

I have him moving eventually to third.

3-14-21 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

College crop of hitters is supplying more questions than answers thus far.

Fabian: Huge K-rates

Franklin: Huge K-rates

Del Castillo: Hitting ok, lacking power

McLain: Very little power

Binelas: Not hitting, K'ing

Morrissette: Hurt, not hitting

Gelof: No power

Wilson: Bad start

Mack’s spin -

This just gives more reason to draft right handed starters on both Day 1 and 2.

3-14-21 - Joe Doyle - JoeDoyleMiLB

Wind can't do anything about this one. Henry Davis with a scorched first inning double.

Davis entered the day slashing .367/.476/.592 w/3 HRs, 5 2Bs, 14 RBI and 7 SB in 14 games.

He's been one of the best players in the country.

Mack’s spin -

Still one on my top three picks at 1.10.

Having him and Francisco Alvarez in the pipeline should insure us going forward with proper depth at that critical position.

Hard draft decisions lie ahead. To o bad we weren't getting Kumar or Leiter. But I don't want a guy who has a big ? mark in his repertoire.

Eddie from Corona said...

Mack I agree with you on maybe this should be the replenish the pitching staff draft but would you take Fabian over that if available?

And looking at that mock draft would you think that could be a possibility? (Meaning those selected ahead in that mock draft are worthy of being 1-9 selections?

Having the Draft in Juky may help the Mets make this decision. They will have had time by then to better assess the needs for pitching and outfield at the lower levels.

I have the seasonal stat lines for both Leiter and Rocker coming up at 10am.

They're awesome, baby!

I would definitely pick Fabian if he fell to us at 10.

The top 10 is very fluid right now and this could easily happen.

As for pitching, there is plenty out their for our next three picks.

You are correct

The need for an outfielder would drop if both Pete Crow-Armstrong and Freddy Valdez came out of the box on fire.

Mack, one more thing. Kumar looks like he went about 112 pitches and 8 innings. I am surprised these guys are let go that long...unless a no hitter is being thrown.

It seems to me the schools have a responsibility to protect guys who have so much $$ on the line.

He's not the only one.

Like I said in an earlier post, and we wonder why there are so many TJS's

Tom Brennan said...

Mack, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine never had TJS, right? There is value to being a surgical pitcher with many precise surgical tools. It helps avoid surgery.
