METS ROSTER MOVES
FLUSHING, N.Y., March 24, 2021 – The New York Mets announced today that RHP Corey Oswalt, catcher Bruce Maxwell and infielder Brandon Drury have been reassigned. In addition, RHP Jordan Yamamoto has been optioned to the Triple-A roster.
The Mets now have 40 players in major league camp.

What's the difference between "optioned" and "re-assigned", anyway?
Bill, I agree that "re-assigned" is a little confusing. I believe one distinction is that the three players who were "re-assigned" are not on the 40-man roster. I don't know, it maybe be that they have to clear waivers first? Whereas "optioned" pertains to 40-man roster players, there's no risk of losing the player, and it is explained below:
>> Being “optioned” happens when a player is on the 40-man roster and has been placed on “Optional assignment” to one of the organization’s minor league affiliates. An Option lasts an entire season; you can go up and down through out the system and only use one “option.”
Designated for Assignment (DFA) means a player has been removed from the 40-man roster and is in a brief limbo state. During this time, they are exposed to waivers and all other teams can claim him, or the team can find a trade partner and work out a trade. If no trade or waiver claim has been made, then the team often will “outright” a player to their minor league team. However, a player may only be outrighted against their will/with no way in the matter once in their career. <<
You had it right Jimmy. Optioned pertains to the 40 man players; re-assigned pertains to the players already on a minor league roster. In regular years the players would be reassigned from the major league camp to the minor league camp. The minor league camp opens next week.
As we had on today's Breakfast Links Ernest Dove reported this: "I'm told news is starting to be given to Mets minor leaguers regarding their status either being part of minors camp next week or reporting to alternate site."
I would assume guys like Drury and Maxwell - players with MLB experience will go to the alternate site. Should there be an injury and a need to fill a 26 man roster spot - they will be close by. MLB will also have a taxi squad that will travel with the team for the same purpose.

Guess he has been reading your comments Jimmy.
I think Montgomery is the clear choice. He's a lefty, can relieve or go long, and we lose him if he's not on the club.
I like Tommy Hunter. But he doesn't the team. He'll likely find a spot elsewhere. Would be nice to work a deal with him in minors -- extend the release date another month or so -- but that's probably unlikely.
Tarpley is also interesting. Don't know his status. Fairly certain that Gseellman can be optioned. Why Sandy agreed to pay him is beyond me. Maybe he can be flipped?

Jimmy - According to FanGraphs, Tarpley has 2 minor league options left so he can be a valuable depth piece. They will probably try and figure out if he is best starting or relieving going forward in Syracuse.
