Mets Games Played On This Date: March 28.

Here is a look at all the Mets Games played on this date, March 28.

Regular season games in March are very rare.  In the over 10,880 regular season games the Mets have played, they have only played 11 in March.

The earliest the Mets ever opened a season was not 2000 in Japan but in 2019 in Washington DC.

On March 28, 2019, the Mets had a new Second Baseman, Robinson Cano, a new closer, Edwin Diaz, and a new GM Brodie Van Wagenen.

Cano homered, Diaz got the save, and the Mets won 2-0.  Optimism ran high as the new season got underway.

Year: 2019 Gm# 1, Thursday,  Mar 28, NYM 2 @ WSN 0 boxscore, Win: deGrom, Loss: Scherzer, Save: Diaz, Time: 2:44, Day Game Attendance 42,263.

Mack - Game Recap: “We all know that we could count on our pitching and I’m been preaching for years that you can win enough games to go into the playoffs if your starters give up less than three runs in first six innings, but you need to back this up with run production, something we are used to not receiving. I will say this… thank God for Robinson Cano.”

Metstradamus: “After Max Scherzer made Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso look like bar leaguers (nailing Alonso on a nasty slider), Robinson Cano stepped to the plate for his first at-bat as a New York Met and sent a fly ball to left center that kept carrying and carrying and carrying and before you knew it, the Mets had a 1-0 lead. Quick starts are always nice for new acquisitions, and hitting a bomb off one of the best pitchers in the game is a heck of a nice start. It gave us the first “there’s your run, Jacob” in 2019.”

Call To The Pen: Robinson Cano breaks five-year drought on Opening Day. “You see, Mets second basemen haven’t been able to hit on Opening Day. Cano’s first-inning shot was the first Opening Day [hit] by a second baseman since 2013. It was April 1st, 2013 when the Mets were playing the Padres that Daniel Murphy recorded the last hit. He went 2-5 while driving in a run.”

The Sports News.com: Mets love Robinson Cano's head even more than his bat and glove.

Mets.com: Cano's impressive debut carries Mets past Nats. Veteran showcases all-around game with HR, two RBIs, heads-up DP. “I like to pay attention to the little details,” he said afterward -- of three things happening on different parts of the diamond. Cano trained his eyes on the throw coming at him from Jeff McNeil at third. He kept tabs on Rendon speeding down the first-base line. Then he noticed Victor Robles, who had retreated to third base on contact, breaking again toward home. Cano fired to the plate. The resulting 5-4-2-5 double play was a thing of unorthodoxy, athleticism and savvy…”

ESPN.com: Cano's HR, deGrom's 10 Ks lift Mets past Scherzer, Nats 2-0.

Not only the Mets first and only official game on March 28, my parents were married 73 years ago today. Dad passed in 1974, so many of those years since were not true anniversary days.

Good to see a shout-out from a Son of Seaver, David Rubin.
