Mack - Draft Thoughts: Kevin Parada, Cole Young, Ian Richie, Robert Moore, Termarr Johnson

7-30-21 - Through The Fence  -

Kevin Parada, C, Georgia Tech

Parada, who will be a draft-eligible sophomore, hit .318/.379/.550 with nine home runs and a seventeen percent strikeout rate in 243 plate appearances while he was still a freshman. He is the definition of an athletic backstop with a decent arm and a fast release, and he’s also well-positioned to stake out a spot close to the top of the board.

Mack’s spin -

Parada is easily the most talented catcher in this draft and could be the only one drafted in the first round.

I don’t see an catcher challenging him here.

22. Cole Young

Shortstop, North Allegheny HS

One of the top middle infielders in the 2022 class. Pretty complete profile. Strong defensively up the middle with good footwork and an accurate arm with the innate feel for timing. Tends to peppers ball into gaps both pull-side and opposite field, but Young has a well-leveraged body with big exit velos. He can ambush fastballs and lift when he wants. Very polished profile that projects to stick at shortstop and hit for average and some pop.

Mack’s spin - I have him as my 9th shortstop, probably a late second round pick.

12. Ian (JR) Ritchie

Right-Handed Pitcher, Bainbridge HS

In a deep prep pitching class, Ritchie stands out for a loud package of both pure stuff and control/command. The fastball sits 92-95 on most days, up to 97. He has a firm, tight slider up into the mid-80s with late two-plane break that he also commands very well. He also built a deeper, high-70s curveball into his arsenal with distinct vertical movement and significant spin rates. Jordan Lawlar called his breaking ball the best pitch he saw all summer in 2021. Ritchie also features a changeup he’s shown feel for with good arm-side fade that he deploys primarily against lefties. Finally, he's working to mix in a low-90s 2-seam fastball, deployed away from righty bats. Ritchie has an extremely quick arm with elite mechanics and lower half strength. He’s a very good bet to start long-term, and has the potential to be the best prep arm to come out of Washington since Blake Snell or Tim Lincecum.

Mack’s spin -

No one throwers a breaking ball like Richie.

Right now I have him as my 4th RHP.

Robert Moore, 2B, Arkansas University (Ark.)

The middle infielder is the son of Kansas City Royals General Manager (GM) Dayton Moore. The Tigers might be in a race with the American League (AL) Central division to scoop up Moore.

Moore has been with the Razorbacks for the past two seasons and will look to have a strong third season with them in 2022.

Mack’s spin -

I have him listed as my third SS on my board.

I want to see more paper being written on him before I switch him to my 2nd 2B behind Jace Jung.

Texas Rangers 2022 Draft Prospects: SS Termarr Johnson

The high school shortstops are impressive in the 2022 class. Another standout and potential top selection next summer could be Georgia high schooler Termarr Johnson.

A shortstop with an average build, Johnson is a smooth fielder who has phenomenal bat speed and plus raw power.

Johnson is currently uncommitted to college, though you’d have to think he is being heavily recruited in addition to pursuing a path to the pros right out of high school.

Either way, he’s a projected top-five pick in 2022, and like with Young, the Texas Rangers have a known interest in shortstops. Therefore, expect Johnson’s name to be circulated in rumors surrounding the organization’s draft plans next year.

Mack’s spin -

Another of these guys that you might get sick of me posting about.

Easily #1 on my SS board.
