Alright now onto the checklist.
Some of my predictions have already happened, some haven’t. The offseason starts in just a few days. Let’s get going
My Predictions were:
Day 1: David Stearns is officially announced as POBO
Day 2: Buck resigns as manager and retires from baseball
Day 3: Stearns fires everybody not named Jeremy Hefner from the coaching staff. Jeremy Barnes will be the first to go
Day 4 and beyond: Extend Pete Alonso and go after Yamamoto
So far, David Stearns is already the President of Baseball Operations and the offseason hasn’t started yet.
Buck did not resign, he was fired and is not retiring. Stearns has not fired the coaching staff but has let go of a few front-office members and scouts. Things are changing in the Mets organization, hopefully for the better.
The next steps for the Mets, according to me, are extend Pete and go sign Yamamoto.
Pete Alonso should be Met for life. I now predict Pete will go to free agency despite the Mets efforts. When Pete became a Scott Boras client a few weeks ago it told us where his head is at. He wants his fair market value and the best deal possible (all fair for Pete, he has earned it). I do believe Pete will return to the Mets in Free Agency for roughly 8 years and $200 million.
Now for Yamamoto. He just took home his 3rd consecutive Sawamura award, the Japanese equivalent of the Cy Young. It looks like Yamamoto will be in high demand and his deal could be $200 million or more. This includes the posting fee. The actual contract value I suspect will not surpass $180 million. He is just 25 years old and is looking to become an ace in the States.
Here are some new predictions for the offseason:
- Craig Counsel is the Mets Manager
- The Mets go get a full-time DH that can also play the outfield. I have very little faith in Starling Marte. A few guys I would like the Mets to go after: Teoscar Hernandez, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Justin Turner, Rhys Hoskins.
- The Mets do NOT get Ohtani or Soto
- Mets sign Yamamoto
- Mets sign Jon Gray
- Mets sign a couple extra starters. Maybe take a flyer on Jack Flaherty or Hyun Jin Ryu
- Mets go get a few relievers. Here a few to note: Hector Neris (Player option), Michael Fulmer, David Robertson reunion, Ryan Stanek
Big Offseason for the Mets ahead. There is new leadership and direction for the franchise, I can not wait to see it unfold.

Owners need to take a pass on this and bring salaries back in line so they won't have to raise prices on fan related costs.
Sign them out of the draft and you have an ample amount of time to groom a replacement

This next draft has 4 top prospects that are first basemen
You play Pete up to the all-star break and then trade him for two prime prospects
You draft one of the 1B studs and start him off in St. Lucie
You play JT at first for the remainder of 24 and all of 25
Or you sign short term replacement until stud draftee is ready

The ones I want from the list above are Yamamoto, Robertson, and Turner. And I'd add Montgomery.
Turner gives us a reliable DH as well as 3B insurance in case the babies fail.
I don't want long-term deals which would block the minor leaguers who are very promising. Since the term "babies" refers to those who have already played in Queens, maybe the top minor leaguers should be called "fetuses".
Play JT. He wasn’t even atop 20 prospect with a team that had a so so farm system!

Pete wants out of NY. Park is unfavorable to him, wants to be a winner. Sees Texas in the playoffs and daydreams of a World Series of his own. Plan around that. He should stay, but $$ and his desire to win it all takes him elsewhere. Mets will win it all some century, not sure it is this one.

2-way P/1B Jac Caglione out of Florida. Hit like 33 home runs last year hitting over .300
College boy. Play him next season at Lucy.
Yamamoto is probably going to cost $200M when all is said and done. I think that is just too huge of a risk. Unlike Max or JV there's no "secpndary" market for him if he struggles. They will have to eat all of his $$$ and get nothing in return. I'd pass.
Instead, sign Imanga. He's the lefty version of Senga and it would probably cost less in years and money than it did to get Senga. For the other starter, I'd be going the trade route. Maybe Sears or Blackburn from Oakland, or Canning from LAA, or Keller from PIT. They probably wouldn't have to give up a Top 5 from their prospect cache to get one of these guys. I'd be on board for a Seth Lugo reunion as well, which should only cost money and no prospects.
I'd be pushing for more BP additions. Maton from Hou and Stephenson from TB. Pair them with Diaz and Raley and find another lefty (Matt Moore?).
My DH would be Rhys Hoskins, who can also spell Pete at first. By the way, no trading Pete!
Caglione would be popular in Brooklyn.
There is only 1 FA position player I’d sign. KBO’s Jung Hoo Lee. He can play all 3 OF spots and push Marte to 4th OF to keep him fresh. Sweet swing, strong fielder, unreal K to BB ratio. Check out his video below. There is also another video of him in the WBC smashing a double off of Yamamato.
From there it’s all about pitching. Give me Yama, Montgomery or E Rod, Robertson or Hicks, and Matt Moore. No QO FA’s with these players too. With Lee and those pitchers we are good to very good in all facets. Let’s start Spring Training.

No, no, no. Yama is a must. You don’t get 24 year old SP with elite stuff and #1 SP potential for just money. It never happens. You have the same risks with Imanga. Imanga reminds me of Maeda. #3 SP at best. In seeing Senga thrive this year why would you doubt the even better pitcher in Yama.
Also why are you trading from our newly built farm system for a SP when the FA market is loaded with them. RP FA market is strong too.

Who are the 4 first base prospects you had reference to? I like that idea. That would definitely give us some options for 2024-25 if Pete chooses to leave.
I would be very surprised if (a) the Mets actually trade Alonso and (b) if they do, they get anything but someone's prospect in the #10-#20 range of their list as the headliner in return.
Trading him makes for intriguing hot stove discussions, but realistically it just isn't happening.
And again, nobody knows anything about Yamamoto. Those are some gaudy stats for sure, but there is no telling what kind of competition he was facing. He certainly went Ker-Plunk in the playoffs.
I'm worried about the Mets getting Counsell. If they don't land him, the pickings are slim, as you saw in R69's post on Tuesday.
I'm not buying a reunion with Justin Turner. He's closer to Medicare than to his prime. Fullmer is already half empty. Hate reunions with former players - they never go well. Yes, that includes you Michael Conforto.
The Jon Gray signing should have happened last year. If they can get him this year, good news.

We know that he has won the Japanese version of the CY for three consecutive seasons.
And do you really think the Mets would trade Pete to get less in return than then did for Max and JV?
