PIITB By JD- Mets Updates for the week

 Mets Updates for the week:

We have the GM meetings to discuss. Plus let’s check back on the off-season checklist.

The GM meetings started and were briefly held this week. They were cut short on Thursday due to a stomach bug going around. David Stearns did speak to the media and had a few main takeaways.

1.     He is willing to upgrade at positions the Mets are already solid at

2.     Pitching is the priority. Looking like 2-3 more starters

3.     Pete Alonso will not be traded

4.     Yamamoto is in the mix for sure

Stearns is very charismatic and is clearly happy to be a Met.

Pete update:

Scott Boras spoke to the media this week as well and indicated that he and the Mets will talk about an extension.

Offseason checklist:

-       Craig Counsel is the Mets Manager

-       Stearns fires everybody not named Jeremy Hefner from the coaching staff. Jeremy Barnes will be the first to go

-       The Mets go get a full-time DH that can also play the outfield. I have very little faith in Starling Marte. A few guys I would like the Mets to go after: Teoscar Hernandez, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Justin Turner, Rhys Hoskins.

-       The Mets do NOT get Ohtani or Soto

-       Mets sign Yamamoto

-       Mets sign Jon Gray

-       Mets sign a couple extra starters. Maybe take a flyer on Jack Flaherty or Hyun Jin Ryu

-       Mets go get a few relievers. Here a few to note:  Hector Neris (Player option), Michael Fulmer, David Robertson reunion, Ryan Stanek

So far so good on the offseason predictions. The whole Mets coaching staff was fired this week besides Jeremy Hefner who remains at least for now.

Congratulations to Joey Cora who moved on to be the Tiger's new manager.

Who knows, maybe in a couple weeks Yamamoto is a Met.

Good approach. One idea is a problem:

“The Chicago Cubs expect right-hander Michael Fulmer to miss the 2024 season after the reliever (recently) had surgery on his pitching elbow.

The Cubs said Fulmer underwent UCL revision surgery, a procedure that has a recovery projection similar to that of Tommy John surgery, on Wednesday. He missed the 2019 season with Detroit because of Tommy John surgery.”

Is the Gray you are referring to actally Sonny? I think Jon Gray signed a longer term deal with Texas a couple years ago?

I was hoping they would sign Jon Gray when he was a FA from Colorado. I have no interest in having Sonny Gray move into his late 30's with the Mets.

Most of what you have on your checklist I agree with. I am not a Teoscar Hernandez fan, but would love to see Lourdes Gurriel Jr. or even Rhys Hoskins, although Hoskins is limited on the field.

Would like to see Yamamoto, but these estimates north of $200M scare me a bit.

Robertson would be great to get back on a short deal, and a couple of pitching reclamation projects at low cost (Flaherty or Giolito) wouldn't bother me.

Bill, the Yanks were never scared of big contracts. It has mostly served them well. Sign Yamamoto. Or bring back Jordan Yamamoto LOL.

I love Joey Cora and wish him the best with the Tigers. Unfortunately, he will not be managing the Tigers. He was assigned to a position in their coaching staff which will not be made public until the coaching staff is finalized. My guess is that he will serve as the 3B coach and infield coach there much as he did with the Mets. If I were in Vegas, I would be the over on Tigers runs scored in 2024.
