Mets Updates for the Week:
It has been a slow week in Mets land, but it wouldn’t be the Mets without something of note. The Mets officially hired Carlos Mendoza as manager and he gave a press conference earlier this week.
Mendy press conference takeaways:
· Stearns is treating the relationship with Mendoza as a “partnership”. This is a major change from the Buck, Billy dynamic.
· Mendy mentioned “culture” several times during the presser. This will be a point of focus. His goal is to hold everyone accountable, pay attention to the details, and most of all still have fun.
· Mendy seems unbelievably happy to be a Met. He was emotional and charismatic. If this does not work out, it won’t be without effort.
· Mendy commands the respect of the room. When he spoke, he held everyone’s attention. He was captivating
As much as you can “win” a press conference, Mendy did just that. While we won’t have a verdict on his merit as a manager for a long time, he showed promise.
Hopefully next week we will have some Yamamoto news. For now, he has not been posted and the Mets, Yankees, Cubs, and Red Sox are considered the finalists per Jeff Passan for when he is.

A lively, attuned Mendoza? He should energetically encourage his pitchers to retaliate and make opposing hitters in general feel more uncomfortable

No rush. They have no one to coach until February.
They've got until 8:00 tonight to announce non-tenders. After that, we can see which other teams' non-tenders might be worth picking up.
Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but if the Mets want to keep someone without tendering him a contract, they can re-sign him to a minor-league deal if he wants to stay with us, can't they?

Eric Chavez will be retained and returned to be the HITTING coach (along with Barnes) instead of bench coach
Good move with Chavez but why keep Barnes. Makes no sense.
As for Asian players I’ll take as many as I can get as long as we’re winning. They also bring in a bigger Japanese and Korean fan base and NY has plenty of Japanese and Korean citizens.
Makes sense to me. If they feel Chavez did a fine job as HC (which I agree with), and Barnes was his assistant while that was ongoing, why shouldn't they team up again?
If Carlos Mendoza interviewed so well that he won the job, I am not surprised that he also impressed with his introductory press conference. Good for him that he got an early win with the tough NY press corps.
The real test will be when he faces adversity - a losing streak, a couple decisions with the bullpen that don't result in success, or a player that lets some dissatisfaction slip in the media. Mendoza's ability to handle that adversity will have a lot to say about his tenure as Mets manager.
