MACK - POSITION ANALYSIS - C

Position Analysis – C

We do this every off-season. We take a look at what the chain is producing, position by position, so we can get an idea of the depth at each position and what emphasis the team needs to place on future signees and draft picks.

First up is the backstop.

Chris Suero – The Bronx born Suero put himself on the Mets map last season aster hitting 16 home runs at the A+/AA level. Also, offers tremendous versatility because he additionally holds his own in left and can also, if needed, can fill in at first. I expect him to get to know the city of Syracuse real well in 2026. Needs to work on his framing skills, cutting down the whiffs, and getting his overall BA/OBP up. My #2 catcher prospect.

Kevin Parada – let’s face it… Parada has been a disappointment since being drafted in the 1st round in 2022; however, he did show signs of life in the 360-PA this past season for AA-Binghamton (10-HR, .254). That’s the good news. The bad is he reverted back to his meh days, hitting a mere .196 in 64-PA for AAA-Syracuse. Combined 113-K in 424-PA. He also plays defense like a blind man and has a weak arm. Going forward, I consider this pick as a dream never dreamed and see Suero quickly passing him as C1 in Cuse.

Ronald Hernandez – signed for an $850K bonus in 2021 (Marlins), I was an early-on favorite of this guy when the Mets traded for him for David Robertson. Still am, but his past season in A+ Brooklyn (6-HR, .224) never came close to what he did the season before in RK-St. Lucie (5-HR, .271). Had 393 A+ Pas this year so, for that reason alone, I see him moving on to AA-Binghamton in April. Every franchise team needs two serviceable catchers. Hernandez seems to be falling into that category.

Daiverson Guitterrez – big, big bonus baby here ($1.9mil/2023). Is this panning out? The key phrase here seems to be TBD. Played the entire 2025 season as a 19/year old for RK-St. Lucie. 395/PA, 4-HR, 41-RBI, 53-BB, only 58-K, .242/.362/.309/.671. Sorry Tom, not much of a slugger. It’s a great start for a really young man playing in a strange land. He will move on to Brooklyn, and, to me, this is a member of a trade package waiting to happen.

Yovanny Rodriguez – okay, let’s get to my #1 Mets catching prospects. Signed in 2024 for a record breaking $2.85mil, Y-Rod played 2025 as an FCL-Metman, and stat lined at the rate of 136-AB, .331, 2-HR, 26-RBI, .939-OPS. Is this good? Normally, only 136 at-bats would warrant a come-back, but this uber-prospect is not going to wait until summer to play his first game. This is your RK-St. Lucie starter on opening day and could easily end the season in Kings County. Every team wants this guy in a package, but he’s not going anywhere. Could someday make Mets fans forget that other Francisco guy.

Julio Zayas – signed for only $5,000 in 2023. That’s so low, it’s 5k below the $10k threshold that impacts the team’s Intl. bonus pool. Will turn 20 in February, Zayas repeated with the FCL Mets this past season, hitting .284 in 173-PA. Also walked 22x, driving his OBP up to .400. Not bad for five-kay. Look, he’s not going back to FCL again, so will he compete with Y-Rod, or will that push Rodriguez to A+ Brooklyn, to cause nightmares for Guitterrez? News at 11.

Josmir Reyes – another under 10K IFA signee that wasn’t counted in the $ pool this time in 2024. He has been a pleasant surprise this past season, catching, DHing, and playing first, and hitting .300/.426/.480/.906 in 190-PA for the Mets DSL Orange team. My guess is Reyes will be the starting FCL catcher in 2026. Defensively, he has a strong arm and scouts in the D say he has a solid overall defensive game to go along with that productive bat. All this for under $10.000.

Mack –

As you see, there is tremendous depth in the chain at this position. My prediction is there are two uber-prospects here, either of which could develop into a very productive major leaguer… Daiverson Guitterrez and Yovanny Rodriguez. Guys like Suero, Hernandez, Zayas, and Reyes could easily become trade bait along the way. Watch out 2030!

Lots of depth. I am more optimistic than you about Parada, whose bat woke up and who raised his season average 100 points after mid-May. He is almost ready for the big leagues….lets say mid - 2026.

Suero will have to learn to hit. It will take a full year or two, probably.

Watched all of Yovanny’s DSL AB’s he had a solid season , would have liked to of seen a bit more power , but overall solid season . The defense needs work.
Josmir Reyes has very good plate discipline in a league where that’s pretty rare . Reyes is a big time lottery ticket who might surprise and surpass prospects who got paid much more.
Keep an eye on Yeider Mindiola big power potential behind the plate.

Excellent information. We would enjoy you post and comment more often. The Mets were scheduled to sign a 2026 top prospect who lied about his age and was ineligible to sign. What happens now with that prospect? Can he sign in 2027?

Should have said " would enjoy having you post and comment". Typing too fast.

I assume you’re referring to Josue Chacoa ? Chacoa will not be signing with the Mets in 2027 , he’s 2 yrs older than his given age . I think his star was losing its shine with the Mets regardless of the age issue as they were cutting his bonus. Look out for a bigger Mets prospect in 2027 getting $3M+ , it’s not all bad news..
