B-Mets Win In Extras, 3-2
BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets scored the game-winning run on a Portland throwing error in the bottom of the 10th, as they walked off against the Sea Dogs 3-2 Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium.
With runners at first and second base, Allan Dykstra hit a ground ball to first baseman Travis Shaw, who originally looked towards second base to start a potential double play ball. He hesitated, looked back to first base, and tossed to a covering Will Latimer. The toss however sailed past the pitcher, allowing Danny Muno to score the winning run.
The inning was set up when Muno led off the tenth with a walk. Josh Rodriguez placed a sacrifice bunt down to move him into scoring position, and Cesar Puello was intentionally walked to set the stage for the Dykstra ground ball.
Portland’s only offense against B-Met starter Logan Verrett came in the third inning. After Verrett had retired the first eight hitters of the game, he allowed a two-out single to Matty Johnson. After Johnson stole second base, Shannon Wilkerson reached on an infield single to third base. The throw from Josh Rodriguez skipped past first base, allowing Johnson to score the first run of the game. Xander Bogaerts then shot a base hit into right field which scored Wilkerson from second base.
After the singles, Verrett continued to retire the final 13 batters he faced. His night ended after 7.0 innings, and he struck out nine hitters in a no-decision.
Binghamton’s offense was held scoreless for the first seven innings of the game. Muno walked to lead off the eighth inning, and Rodriguez hit an opposite field home run to tie the game against Pete Ruiz.
One night after receiving a loss, Jeff Walters returned to the mound and threw two scoreless innings. The B-Met closer picked up the first Double-A win of his career. Will Latimer was tagged with the loss; the lefty retired just one hitter and gave up the game-winning run in the tenth inning.
The third game of this four-game series between the B-Mets (27-22) and Sea Dogs (28-19) continues Sundaynight at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton will send RHP Rafael Montero to the mound to take on Portland’s Charlie Haeger. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show starting at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
