LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets broke a tie game with a three-run fourth inning and four pitchers retired the final 19 Harrisburg Senators in an 8-2 victory last night at Metro Bank. The win, their first of May, snapped Binghamton’s season-long three-game losing streak. Darrell Ceciliani drove in three runs on three hits, including his first home run of the season. Erik Goeddel allowed two runs in the third, but settled in and retired the final 10 batters he faced to earn his second victory. Three B-Mets relievers combined for three perfect innings of relief. Paul Demny was tagged for five runs in four innings in his fourth defeat.
BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER: LHP Mark Cohoon makes his second start of the season and first appearance against the Senators. Cohoon tossed four shutout innings against the Erie SeaWolves in his last start on April 30. The southpaw began the season in the bullpen, allowing five earned runs in 6.1 innings. Cohoon makes his 47th career start with the B-Mets today, ranking him sixth in franchise history. The Burleson, Texas native was selected in the 12th round of the 2008 draft out of North Central Texas College.
HARRISBURG STARTING PITCHER: RHP Caleb Clay gets the ball for the sixth time in search of his fourth win of the season. The righty surrendered two unearned runs on three hits over 5.2 innings in a win over the New Britain Rock Cats in his last start on April 30. Picked 44th overall in the 2006 draft by the Boston Red Sox, Clay spent the last two seasons in the Portland Sea Dogs bullpen. He was signed as a Minor League free agent by the Nationals this offseason.
PERFECT BULLPEN WORK: Adam Kolarek, Josh Edgin and Jeff Walters each posted a perfect inning of relief last night. The B-Mets bullpen has retired all 15 hitters they have faced in the first two games of the series. Over the last three games, Binghamton relievers have retired 23 straight batters and lowered their combined ERA to 3.65.
THESE GO TO ELEVEN: Cesar Puello bounced a single off the leg of reliever Marcos Frias in the eighth inning last night to extend his hitting streak to a 2013 B-Met-best eleven games. Puello has hit .317 (13-for-41) during the streak. Three B-Mets have had hit streaks reach double digits: Alonzo Harris (10 games) & Allan Dykstra (10).
SIZZLING CECILIANI: B-Mets outfielder Darrell Ceciliani went 3-for-5 last night with three RBI, three runs scored and a solo home run. It was his first round-tripper since he went deep with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A) on April 9, 2012. Ceciliani also stole a base, Binghamton’s first swipe in three games. He has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, raising his batting average 54 percentage points.
COMING THROUGH WITH RISP: The B-Mets went 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position last night and drove in four runs with two outs. Binghamton had managed just five hits with runners in scoring position total in their previous four games.
SNAPPING A FUNK: B-Mets first baseman Allan Dykstra ended an 0-for-16 slump with a double in the ninth inning last night. Dykstra had hit safely in ten straight games before falling into the hitless skid.
SET FOR THE RUBBER MATCH: Last night’s B-Mets win set the stage for today’s rubber match. Binghamton has gone 0-2 in series-deciding games, falling to Portland on April 17 and losing to Akron on April 28.
SERIES VICTORY AT STAKE: The B-Mets have not won a series since they took three of four from the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (4/18-21). Since then, they have lost two and split a four-game set.
TOUGH FINISH: The B-Mets have gone 3-5 in the final game of a series this season.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their roadtrip and start a three-game series against the Trenton Thunder tomorrow night at 7:05 PM.
