I think this draft pool system is a travesty! I'm certainly no fan of the Nationals, but 2 million for the first TEN ROUNDS!
That's the curse of building a great team...
You have to either take a shot and sign just one good player, or draft ten decent to crappy players. If the Mets start to succeed in a year or two, they'll have the same fate. How do you sustain success without being able to draft? Your forced into the free agent market, that's how.
So, then, you end up right where they are now. Waiting for contracts to end while they rebuild the system. This system is completely unfair to the good teams.
There should be a base alottment around 3.5 to 4 million. Increase the amount the top ten teams have to pick so they still have a clear advantage.
However, 2 million is insane. At best, if you can get 3 high schoolers to pass on college, you might be able to get one decent player in that draft.
well, then, for that one year, you have to dip into the FA market to improve your team or sign international free agents.
There are opions.
Sorry Mack but the Mets have done that and failed miserably for years. They've been pitiful since 2009 and luckily the contracts from bad signings are finally ending, while the system is finally producing.
When it all does produce a good team, the way to sustain it is through the draft, not free agency. This system sucks!
The Mets will never take a chance with big money on an international free agent. That's almost funny to think the Wilpons would ever sign an unproven player for big money like a Cepedes or Chapmam. Especially after Kaz Matsui...
we'll see :)
