Sand Gnats (16-9) not intimidated, beat Intimidators (10-15) 6-3
With this win, the Gnats crept into a tie for 1st place in the South Atlantic League.
Starter Matt Bowman (W, 4-0) went 8.0 innings: Held Kannapolis to 3 ER, 7 H, 0 BB, 8 K. Nice outing.
Bret Mitchell earned his 3rd save with a perfect 9th inning, striking 2 of the 3 batters he faced.
Eudy Pina: 2-4, BB, RBI, 2 R.
Phillip Evans: 3-4, 2B, RBI, R.
Kevin Plawecki: 3-5, 3 2B, RBI, R.
Plawecki’s 3 doubles boosts his league leading AVG. to .402, his league leading SLG. to .696, and his league leading OPS to 1.158. His .462 is only .003 shy of the league lead in OBP, which is held by team mate Jayce Boyd at .465. A promotion to St. Lucie is not far off in Plawecki’s future.
St Lucie (16-9) falls to Tampa (11-14) 7-3 in Game 1
Starter Domingo Tapia (L, 2-3) went only 1 inning, giving up 1 ER on a leadoff walk, a stolen base and 2 ground outs, each advancing the runner. No hits, but that was enough to tag him with the loss.
Marcos Camarena relieved Tapia to start the 2nd inning, but he lasted only 0.1 innings, allowing 3 ER on 4 H and a BB.
Not much offense to brag about.
Rylan Sandoval: 2-4, BB, 2 R.
St Lucie (16-9) @ Tampa (11-14) – Game 2 postponed (Rain)
Erie (13-11) blasts Binghamton (14-12) 11-4
Highly ranked pitching prospect Rafael Montero was pasted in 6.2 innings, allowing 10 runs (7 earned) on 10 hits, (1 HR) 1 BB, with 5 strikeouts. Not a great outing for this prospect, who is considered an integral part of the Mets’ future.
He was followed by Adam Kolarek, who gave up a run on 4 hits in 1.1 innings.
John Church pitching a perfect 9th inning.
Francisco Pena: 3-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, R. Pena has his average up to .311.
Blake Forsythe: 2-4, 2B, R. Forsythe is hitting .347 for the year.
Suddenly, the Mets’ organization, which was thought to be devoid of catching talent as recently as last winter, has catchers at all levels hitting the hide off the ball. Buck, (MLB) d’Arnaud, (AAA – currently on DL) Centeno, (AAA) Forsythe, (AA) Pena, (AA) and Plawecki (A) are all above or near .300, and several are among the leaders of their respective leagues. Camden Maron (A+) is having a merely ordinary season, to date.
At this writing, Las Vegas (12-12) leads Reno (8-18) 11-3 after 6 ½ innings
Carlos Torres pitched a credible 5.1 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits (1 HR) and 2 walks, with 4 strikeouts.
He was relieved by Justin Hampson, who got the final 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Offensively, thus far:
Omar Quintanilla: 2-5, 2B, RBI.
Jamie Hoffmann: 1-3, 2B, R.
Andrew Brown: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R.
Wilmer Flores: 1-3, BB, 2 RBI, R.
Eric Campbell: 2-4, HR, BB, 4 RBI, R.
Juan Centeno: 3-4, 2B, R.
