Minor League Madhouse posted their third 2020 mock and
they had the following player as the Mets pick at #19:
New York Mets: Patrick Bailey, C, North Carolina State
In about four years, the Mets could have the strongest farm
system in baseball thanks to a dominating infield crop, but they could take
advantage of a weaker catcher group than last year and nab arguably the best
college catcher of the class. While there is split consensus on how well he
will hit as a pro, despite generally solid offensive numbers for the Wolfpack
and Team USA, Bailey’s floor as a defense first catcher with slightly below
average offensive tools represents an improvement over the likes of Tomas Nido, Ali Sanchez, and possibly Patrick Mazeika. He’d be a solid heir to Wilson Ramos.
Mack – It amazes me that some of these so-called ‘experts’
completely ignore International prospects like Francisco
Alvarez, Endy Rodriguez, and Fernando Villalobos.
1.
Mick Abel, Jesuit (Portland, Ore.)
Right-handed Pitcher | 6-5 | 198
Stats: 9-0 record, 1.34 ERA, 90 Ks, 57.1 innings pitched.
Honors: Gatorade State Player of the Year; MaxPreps Junior
All-American.
What scouts are saying: Fastball hits 94-97 … Breaking ball
could be a plus pitch at Major League level … Very projectable … Struggles with
walks at times … Has four-pitch arsenal.
Where he'll go: Most mock drafts don't have a high school
player going in Top 5. Abel appears in the Top 10 multiple times and will
probably be among the second group of five players. Could be highest pick from
Oregon in 25 years.
D1 Baseball broke out to their subscribers their list of the top 20 ‘mid-major’ prospects to know. They let the non-subscribers get a peek at one:
Austin Vernon, RHP, North Carolina Central
Listed at 6-foot-7, 290 pounds, Vernon brought power and
excitement to the bump this summer in the Cape Cod League as a late inning
reliever with a big fastball and two above average off-speed offerings. He
struck out 31 batters in 20.2 IP during the Cape regular season after punching
out 57 in 44 IP for the Eagles last spring…
Slade Cecconi is a rare true sophomore that is eligible for
the 2020 MLB Draft; Cecconi is currently 20 years old, but will be 21 shortly
after the draft. The former Under Armour and Perfect Game All-American was one
of the top freshmen pitchers in the country last season. He made seventeen
appearances and started in 13 of them. He had a 5-4 record with a 4.16 ERA, 18
walks and 89 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched. After his freshman season,
Cecconi was named to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s 2018 Freshman All-American
Team.
Over the summer, Slade Cecconi worked out to fill in his
large frame and add some solid weight. His fastball velocity has made a jump
from last season to fall ball. That progress makes it all the more likely that
he could make his way to professional baseball after this college season.
Cecconi’s best pitch is his fastball, which sits in the low
to mid-90s. Miami’s pitching coach J.D. Arteaga told D1 Baseball, “Slade was
throwing between 95 and 99 this fall.” His biggest issue last season was his
velocity would drop off as he went deeper into games. His best offspeed pitch
is his slider, reaching 87 mph with some bite to it. He also throws a lot of
strikes, but sometimes misses over the plate and gets hit. Cecconi has a
changeup and curveball he’s currently trying to improve. If the Marlins want to
go after a pitcher with their second-round pick, Cecconi could be the arm
they’re looking for.
Tanner Burns RHP Auburn
Dan
Zielinski III - Baseball Prospect Journal - June : "Burns, a 6-0,
205-pound righty, has been a reliable and successful starter throughout his
first two years at Auburn. Out of high school, he was a potential first-round
pick but bypassed pro ball for Auburn in 2017. He throws a mid-90s fastball,
changeup and curveball."
2019 – SOPHOMORE YEAR - Named a third team
All-American by Perfect Game, becoming the 25th All-American in program history
… led the team with 15 starts while posting a 4-4 record and 2.82 ERA … struck
out 101 batters in 79.2 innings, joining Casey Mize (2017-18) as the only
Auburn pitchers to strike out 100+ batters since 2000
