Mack's Mock Pick # 49 - SS - Cody Morrisette

Cody Morissette

Mack's spin -

Morissette may be off to a slow start this season, but that doesn't change the fact that this multi-position infielder will go in the second round.

He reminds me of an early Jeff McNeil.

He may be listed as a shortstop, but I have him as a future full time second baseman.

Boston College IF Cody Morissette went big-time today. No doubt shot. Reportedly got a good bit stronger this offseason in an effort to impact the ball more. Ben Zobrist type of player

Second base ranks for the 2021 season. A lot of these guys have versatility or project to move to 2B as professionals. The Boston College tandem of Sal Frelick and Cody Morissette lead the way, though Max Ferguson and Tyler Black are very good players. Dayton Dooney is a sleeper

30. Cody Morissette, SS, Boston College

Morissette is the stereotypical polished college infielder likely to go late in the first or early in the compensatory round. He does a little bit of everything, but he doesn't necessarily have a real plus tool. Nick Loftin went 32nd to the Royals last summer, and that should provide a guidepost on where Morissette becomes an option. Boston College hasn't produced a first-round pick since Justin Dunn in 2016, and hasn't had two players go in round one since Tony Sanchez and Mike Belfiore in 2009.

Areas To Improve: Improve defensive reputation, steal some bags/hit some homers

Morissette’s defensive reputation isn’t bad but he’s talked about more as a versatile defender than a player who could stand out at a premium defensive position. It’s unclear if Morissette will get a chance to handle shortstop this spring—returning shortstop Brian Dempsey is still in the fold—but if he does get innings at the position, showing he can play short at the next level will add value to his profile. Outside of that, Morissette doesn’t have much of a carrying tool, so either adding more power (ala Baylor shortstop Nick Loftin in 2020) or displaying more usable speed on the bases could elevate a well-rounded but unspectacular toolset.

I really think there is a ton of Ben Zobrist in Cody Morissette. From the swing, the natural loft, the all-fields approach, the plate discipline, even the versatility to roam around the field, he can impact the game in a number of ways.

The concerns on the profile will be whether or not you’re comfortable and confident the bat is going to impact the baseball enough to warrant a big league regular role. I think he has that upside, and his versatility should buoy that as well.

Morissette really began hitting the ball a lot harder in 2020, as well as lifting the ball. If he continues that trend and hits eight or nine home runs in 2021, he just might play himself into the middle of the first round.

Age At Draft: 21.5

Morissette hit .320/.371/.476 during a loud 2019 freshman season, when he was named a Freshman All-American as an everyday second baseman for the Eagles. While Morissette’s teammate Sal Frelick has the louder all-around toolset, Morissette has 50-55-grade tools across the board himself and the prettier swing of the two. The 6 feet, 175-pound infielder has impressive bat speed from the left side and a chance to hit for a solid average with average or a tick better power. His best asset might be his defensive versatility, as he’s capable of handling second base, shortstop and third base, though scouts believe he’s fringy enough at shortstop that he doesn’t project as a regular at the position. For some he looks like an offensive second baseman who will do everything on the diamond well. Morissette can hit the ball over the fence, but won’t ever be a big-time home run hitter, he can swipe a bag but he won’t ever give catchers anxiety—he’s the steady eddy type who appeals to evaluators the more they watch him go out and produce. A career .346/.402/.512 hitter, Morissette’s well-rounded skillset should see him go on the first day of the draft, with more upside if he can improve his defensive reputation as a shortstop or tap into more power in his draft season like Baylor shortstop Nick Loftin did a year ago.

I tell you what... there's an awful lot to like about Boston College IF Cody Morissette. Kid may quietly have the best bat-to-ball skills in the class. Haven't come across tape of a guy using the whole field better than this guy. Power may come. Rover on the IF. Zobrist-type

Second Base - Cody Morissette, Boston College

Morissette has one of the sweetest lefthanded swings in the sport and forms a pretty formidable trio for the Eagles as expectations are high heading into 2021. He’s been a starter right away since he got to campus as he hit .320 with an OPS north of .800 his freshman campaign before going bonkers over the first four weeks of the 2020 campaign with a .448 mark and already getting to half of his home run total from 2019. He’s a good athlete who could play either of the positions in the middle infield and also is a pretty good runner, too. There’s a well-balanced profile overall and if he can improve his power output this season he’ll soar up boards.

Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers grab an ultra versatile infielder and the final part of Boston College’s vaunted trio in Cody Morissette. Morissette has an athletic pedigree, and while he’s primarily a slap hitter, his IQ and growth potential ensures there’s more coming. Morrissette could be a pro shortstop, though he can also play third base and second base.

14. San Francisco Giants | Kahlil Watson, SS, Wake Forest HS | (2/43) Cody Morissette, SS, Boston College

Watson burst onto the national scene this summer and didn’t slow down at all, both literally and figuratively as his plus speed was consistently on display while his offensive output only seemed to excel throughout the circuit. He’s a left-handed hitter with lightening quick hands and proved that the power plays while showing a solid collection of tools up the middle where you can easily project him to stay at the next level. With the second pick the Giants grabbed another up-the-middle prospect, this time from the collegiate ranks with Cody Morissette of Boston College. His fluidity in his left-handed swing and pure hit tool have been on display since arriving on campus and he was off to a torrid start prior to the shutdown in 2020 with a .448 average. He’ll anchor the middle of the diamond on defense for the Eagles where he’ll remain at the next level, though it’s the offensive skillset that has helped set him apart thus far. -Jheremy Brown

Cervino’s Take: Prep shortstops are the headliners on the high school side of the draft and the Giants grab the biggest riser in Kahlil Watson in the first and a safe college bat in Boston College’s Cody Morissette. Watson’s the first prep shortstop the Giants would have taken since 2013 and Morissette fits their draft trends a bit better given his college resume and safe hit tool. Regardless the combination of high ceiling and high floor with their first two picks make for a solid pair.

A strong performer his Freshman season at "The Heights" Morrisette carried some of that momentum over to the 2019 Cape Cod League. A hit tool first second baseman, Morrisette was flashing more over the fence pop in the early going, showcasing a swing with more loft. The big question with Morrisette is how much juice is in the bat if he's not an impact defender.

Cody Morissette, Boston College SS

McLain’s counterpart on the East Coast, Morissette has hit from Day 1 on campus. A .320/.371./426 slash as a Freshman was followed by .448/.522/.655 in the shortened Sophomore campaign. As a member of the North Shore Navigators of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England, Morrissette continued to improve.

A .340/.480/.511 slash mirrors his past results, while walking 21.8% of the time. Even better, his strikeouts were lower than his walks. The only downside was his .899 fielding percentage, low but not necessarily out of line in a small sample given his .941 collegiate percentage.
