SNY.TV: The Mets will be in Jupiter, Fla. on Sunday for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch against the Marlins.

MLB Film Room: Jacob Barnes whiffs two.

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets’ pitching experiment works in spring training test run. Jacob Barnes and Joey Lucchesi combined Saturday about as well as manager Luis Rojas could have wanted, as the Mets experimented with an opener for the first time.

Mike Puma NY Post: Francisco Lindor’s Mets spring training surge hits new level. “Francisco Lindor’s spring rampage (and contract extension push?) continued with a 3-for-3 performance Saturday in the Mets’ exhibition win. Lindor reached base four times and drove in three runs. He owns a 1.098 OPS this spring.”

Tim Healey Newsday: Valuable bench player Jonathan Villar not likely to start season on IL. “The Mets hope he can play Monday, their last exhibition game before Opening Day on Thursday, but that is not a guarantee.  Drew Smith (sore right shoulder) is likely to begin the year on the IL. He has been playing catch but hasn’t thrown off a mound recently, Rojas said . . . Arodys Vizcaino (sore right elbow) might pitch Sunday or Monday. He threw live BP on Thursday.”

NorthJersey.com: Talented 2021 NY Mets hope to make a run and win World Series.  “For all the work the Mets did to improve, they'll still be tested because they're playing in arguably the toughest division in baseball. They start with three games in Washington, then go to Philadelphia for three more.”

Rising Apple: Three Mets prospects who could find themselves in the rotation this season. Thomas Szapucki; Franklyn Kilome; and Sam McWilliams.

Rising Apple: What should the plan of action be with Robert Gsellman? I believe the Mets should utilize the Minor League option that Robert Gsellman has remaining to add Jacob Barnes to the Opening Day roster due to the great spring he has had. I firmly believe as well that Mike Montgomery should make the roster in place of Gsellman, who they could risk losing.

MetsMerized Online: Luis Rojas Would Prefer Second Lefty in Bullpen. “Mets’ manager Luis Rojas said on Friday that it’s important for New York to carry a second lefty in the bullpen in addition to Aaron Loup and mentioned Mike Montgomery, Stephen Tarpley and Jerry Blevins as players who are still competing for the spot.”

Per National Pastime.com:

1985

Sports Illustrated's April 1st edition tricks the nation when author George Plimpton weaves a fictitious tale of The Curious Case Of Sidd Finch, a Mets rookie phenom who throws a 168 mph fastball. Staged photographs and quotes from Mets in real-life help to give the story a realistic edge.

2013

Mets GM Sandy Alderson announces an MRI has revealed 34 year-old Johan Santana has re-torn his surgically repaired left shoulder capsule and indicates additional surgery is a "strong possibility" for the left-hander. The Venezuelan southpaw, who missed the entire 2011 season due to the injury, will probably never pitch again for the team, finishing his six-year, $137.5 million contract with the team, a deal he signed upon his trade to the team in early 2008, on the disabled list.

 Baseball Reference:

1976 - Media sources report a potential blockbuster trade between the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers which involves two future Hall of Fame pitchers. According to the rumor, the deal will send Tom Seaver to the Dodgers in exchange for Don Sutton. Mets fans respond negatively to the proposed deal, perhaps influencing management to call off the trade. Seaver will remain with the Mets until 1977, when he is traded to the Cincinnati Reds, in a trade which will be universally rued by Mets fans.

1977: Texas Rangers second baseman Lenny Randle, upset at having been benched during spring training, physically confronts manager Frank Lucchesi, sending him to the hospital with a shattered cheekbone. Lucchesi helps precipitate the incident by calling the usually good-natured Randle a "punk". Randle will receive a 30-day suspension. On April 26th, he will be traded to the New York Mets for infielder Rick Auerbach and cash.

2014: Major league baseball is back in Montreal, QC for the first time since 2004 as the Blue Jays play the first of two exhibition games against the Mets. More than 46,000 fans, most sporting the colors of the defunct Montreal Expos, pack Stade Olympique to pay tribute to Hall of Famer Gary Carter and to their beloved former team. The Jays win, 5 - 4, on minor league veteran Ricardo Nanita's run-scoring single with two outs in the 9th. Tomorrow, over 50,000 fans will be at the game in what will become an annual tradition to close out the Jays' schedule of pre-season exhibition games.

Dom shows us why he will play despite his below-average-expected defense in LF. LETHAL bat.

Remember 1969 needs to watch that Jeff McNeil sterling defensive play a few times. Jeff's gonna do fine.

BTW, Jeff has just 5 hits, but EIGHT HBP? What is THAT?

NIDO MINUS ONE GAME....loved his 3 for 3 game, but otherwise, he is 2 for 21 with 10 Ks. Never get the warm and fuzzies with him.

If you saw Barnes yesterday, he HAS to make this team's pen. He looked great.

Gsellman 8 innings, 16 runners, presumably 40 batters faced, just 4 strikeouts. Reminds me of Chris Flexen circa 2019. He needs to figure it out in AAA...if he can.

Problem with AAA is it isn’t the big leagues. You need to evaluate the stuff and see if Gsellman is worth it. I can’t say yes or no, but there’s enough of a sample size to see something wasn’t right and he was getting a little bit worse each year. Flexen was constantly yo-yo’d up and down catching red eyes and then getting thrown to garbage time. Now, he needs to take advantage of any opportunity but he hasn’t had four seasons of MLB stats to ponder. Just saying...
