NY Post: Fred Wilpon’s sale of New York Mets broadcast channel SNY a dud. “Wilpon and Katz have loaded down the profitable SNY with more than $800 million in debt over the years, creating yet another sales hurdle because they cannot lower the price below what they need to pay off the debt.”

Ken Davidoff NY Post: Mets deserve pitcher like Jose Berrios at MLB trade deadline. “Berrios, the 27-year-old right-hander, owns a 106 career ERA-plus and 118 this season and will be eligible for free agency after the 2022 campaign. He is solid, not spectacular, and could slot in as the fourth starter. For sure he would be worth giving up shortstop Ronny Mauricio, whose position is blocked by Francisco Lindor for the foreseeable future.”

1962

Rod Kanehl, appearing as a pinch-hitter, hits the first grand slam in Mets history, going deep off Bobby Shantz in the eighth inning of the team's 10-3 victory over the Cardinals at the Polo Grounds. The bases loaded round-tripper comes in the 79th game of the franchise's existence.

1962

In a rare Mets victory, Gil Hodges goes deep off Redbird hurler Ray Sadecki for his 370th and final home run of his career, finishing tenth on the all-time list and with the most round-trippers ever hit by a right-handed batter in the National League. In attendance at the Polo Grounds contest is eight year-old Howie Rose, the future Mets radio voice watching his first major league game, and Ralph Kiner, the play-by-play announcer for the expansion team, who will have the quiet first baseman on his postgame show, Kiner Korner, reminding his guest that the right-handed NL home run mark had been established by him in 1954.

Recently acquired outfielder Richard Hidalgo establishes a club record, homering in five straight games for the Mets. In 16 games with New York, the former Astro has eight home runs, compared to hitting just four with Houston in 56 games.

Megill was great again. Diaz gave us stress in the 9th but righted himself and got the Save.

When Diaz started shakily, I just shut it off and figured I'd watch the clips later. Less stressful. He was a bit rusty.
