Palmer goes 5 for 6 from leadoff spot in loss
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 11, 2021) – The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels earned a 3-3 series split by beating the St. Lucie Mets 13-9 at Clover Park on Sunday afternoon (Box Score).
The loss spoiled a terrific offensive performance by the Mets, who pounded out 15 hits. Leadoff hitter Jaylen Palmer had monster game, going 5 for 6 with two doubles, three singles, two runs scored and a RBI.
Edgardo Fermin reached base four times on two walks and two singles. Matt Dyer went 2 for 2 with his team-leading seventh home run and a double.
Warren Saunders and Nic Gaddis each hit two-run doubles.
It was a back-and-forth contest for most of the day. The Mussels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning only to see the Mets score the next three runs to take a 3-2 lead in the third.
Fort Myers put together a six-run fifth inning to go up 8-3. The Mets rallied for the next six runs to take a 9-8 advantage. Saunders hit a game-tying two-run double in the sixth. Alex Ramirez then followed with a RBI single to give the Mets the 9-8 lead.
It was a short lead. The Mussels pulled away by scoring five runs in the seventh. Kole McKinnon tied the game 9-9 on a RBI single off Jeffrey Colon. The next batter Misael Urbina hit a three-run home to make it 12-9 Mussels.
Mussels relievers Juan Pichardo, Matthew Swain and Denny Bentley held the Mets off the board over the final three innings. Pichardo (3-2) pitched 1.1 innings to get the win.
Brailin Gonzalez (1-2) took the loss for the Mets. He gave up five runs in 2.0 innings of relief.
The Mets (31-29) are now halfway through the 120-game season. They are off on Monday and return to the diamond on Tuesday when the start a six-game road series at the Palm Beach Cardinals.
