6-16-21 - mlb - MLB Mock Draft
1. Pirates: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (Chula Vista, Calif.)
No change at the top, with Mayer still very much in the mix with Jordan Lawlar, Kahlil Watson and Louisville catcher Henry Davis on the offensive end and perhaps Jack Leiter on the mound.

Making the Case to Draft Marcelo Mayer
The general consensus is that Mayer would not just be a fine choice as the #1 pick, but also the best choice. However, aside from Mayer ranking as a very highly touted top prospect, he could also go for under slot value. This is something the Pittsburgh Pirates should heavily consider.

1 Tigers
Pick: SS Marcelo Mayer, Eastlake HS (California) ($7,221,200 slot value)
Rumor has it the Tigers are leaning shortstop here, and with Lawlar off the board in our mock draft, Mayer is the best available. He is a lefty hitting do-it-all shortstop with loud tools who makes the game look very easy. The Tigers have a known affinity for pitchers who perform well in the SEC (Casey Mize, Alex Faedo, etc.) and that could lead them to one of the Vanderbilt righties if Lawlar and Mayer go 1-2 in either order. The bet here is Detroit will go with the potential star shortstop, and hope to have Mayer alongside 2019 No. 5 pick Riley Greene and 2020 No. 1 pick Spencer Torkelson in the lineup the next time they contend for a World Series.

1. Pittsburgh Pirates: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake (Calif.) HS
The Pirates have the largest signing bonus pool in this year’s draft. No player will command the entire $8.5 million slot value, so that will let the Pirates save some money regardless of who they pick at No. 1. Mayer has the highest upside. Prep shortstops Kahlil Watson and Jordan Lawlar and Louisville catcher Henry Davis also are in the mix for this pick.

SS Marcelo Mayer
A left-handed hitter, Mayer is batting .437 through 25 games. He has 13 home runs, 40 RBIs and 39 runs scored. In 103 plate appearances, which includes 25 walks, he has struck out just three times. And he has 16 stolen bases.

1. Pirates: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (Chula Vista, Calif.)
The Pirates seem to have seven players still in the mix here and Mayer, who scouts have extreme confidence will hit, is right in the middle of that conversation.

A look at Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake High School.Currently ranked #1 in California and #3 in the country. Was 1-2 on the day with a walk and IBB. Beautiful swing from the left side, also stole a few bags.

3. Tigers: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (Chula Vista, Calif.)
He might be relatively anonymous compared to the other top-tier talents, but Mayer has the upside of a Corey Seager bat with a Brandon Crawford glove.

4. Boston Red Sox: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake (Calif.) HS
Mayer has a balanced set of tools and will stick at shortstop long-term. He’s enhanced his value this spring, causing some scouts to view him as a better prospect than Lawlar. He has a smooth left-handed swing and drives the ball with ease. Rocker also would be in play here if he doesn’t go in the first three picks. Louisville catcher Henry Davis likely will be an option for the Red Sox too.

4) Red Sox: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (Calif.)
The Red Sox would love one of those top three to be here, particularly Leiter or Lawlar, which could easily happen if Mayer goes above.

3) Tigers (Callis): Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (Chula Vista, Calif.) -- I almost went back-to-back Vanderbilt pitchers, but Mayer’s sweet left-handed swing and smooth shortstop play were too much to pass up.

5. Baltimore Orioles: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (CA)
Another prospect who doesn’t have any one skill better than the other, Marcelo Mayer does just about everything right. Much like many shortstops we’ve seen lately in the first round over the past five years, Mayer is a tall and lean player who isn’t a burner but has raw power. Baltimore hasn’t had a good shortstop since Manny Machado. Mayer might be a good start.

10. New York Mets: Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (CA)
Another prospect who doesn’t have any one skill better than the other, Marcelo Mayer does just about everything right. Much like many shortstops we’ve seen lately in the first round over the past five years, Mayer is a tall and lean player who isn’t a burner but has raw power. After trading away some of their top prospects, Mayer would inject some talent into the Mets’ farm system.

5. SS Marcelo Mayer | School: East Lake HS, CA | Commit: USC | B / T: L / R | Ht: 6’3 | Wt: 188lbs | Age: 18.6
An all-around talented athlete with one of the better approaches at the plate to go with a Plus Hit Tool. Showing a smooth, consistent swing from the left side. However, the bat path is rather flat but has been showing more loft as of late which has carried early into the spring and projects for League-Average Power numbers, with the potential for more as he tinkers with his bat path as he enters pro ball to tap into that power more consistently. As good as he is in the box, he shows equally as a Plus Defender at SS with a Plus Arm that’s capable of making most any throw on the infield. Similar to Corey Seager.

Steve B. (USA):
Have you heard any projections or comps for Marcelo Mayer's offensive upside? Are we looking at a glove first SS who can hit enough or is there more to dream on?
Carlos Collazo: He’s not a glove-first shortstop by any means. In fact, some scouts have even wondered if he eventually moves off the position to SS. But he was the player scouts voted as “best defensive infielder” in our preseason poll of scouting departments, so I don’t think that is a consensus opinion. I still think he can be a really good SS. The comp that seems to be flying around a lot for Mayer at this point is Corey Seager, in the sense that both are bigger shortstops (Seager was more physical than Mayer now, but Mayer has some room to add a lot of strength to his frame) who aren’t great runners but handle the position well with fluidity, reliable hands, a good throwing arm and instincts. It wouldn’t be surprising for him to develop into a plus hitter with above-average power. That’s why he’s in that top four group of players and on the cusp of the “big three trio of Rocker/Leiter/Lawlar” or even already in that group for some teams. He’s a very good offensive prospect.

#4. Marcelo Mayer, SS
Considered the top defensive shortstop of the 2021 class (per BA), Mayer is a bit bigger than Lawlar above and projects to potentially wield more power once he fully grows into his body. A 6-3, 185-pounds, Mayer comes out of California’s loaded Eastlake High School, a prep powerhouse that has produced a few early-round selections over the last few drafts. While Mayer’s true power potential varies among evaluators, everyone seems to agree when it comes to the 18-year-old’s hitting and defensive abilities. Some are even comping him to the Dodgers Corey Seager.

4. Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS, Chula Vista, Calif.
He is among the best defenders of the prep shortstops, with pro actions, soft hands, and good feet. He has further to go at the plate, but the left-handed hitter has shown solid plate discipline.

Marcelo Mayer | Eastlake (Chula Vista)
In 2019, the Titans had a first-round draft pick in Keoni Cavaco and they could have another one in Mayer, one of the nation's top shortstops. He was batting .294 with three home runs last spring in seven games.

Marcelo Mayer – Another potential top-5 pick, Mayer may be the best pure hitter in the prep class, and he has the frame to grow into plus power one day. He’s an average runner but he has the instincts, hands, and arm to stick at the six long term.

5. Marcelo Mayer, SS, Eastlake HS (CA)
Mayer, a Southern Cal commit, is regarded as the second-best shortstop in the class. He has a defensive toolkit to bank on, as it should allow him to remain at the six. His offensive profile is a little more speculative. He has a projectable frame (6-foot-3, 188 pounds), but his left-handed swing is going to require work if he's to develop pop. Even if his bat plays light, he should offer enough value to hold down a starting job someday.

Areas To Improve: Add strength, show impact, quickness defensively
Mayer has an argument as the best pure hitter in the 2021 prep class, but he could add to his offensive profile by starting to fill out a projectable 6-foot-3 frame and tapping into more in-game power. His swing is currently leveraged well for more power and many scouts already believe he’ll grow into above-average pop down the line. Showing it sooner rather than later would add even more confidence to their projections. While Mayer is a standout defender who slows the game down well, some scouts would like to see a bit more quickness defensively to prove he can stick at shortstop long term.
